Into Africa: The Epic Adventures of Stanley and Livingstone, by Martin Dugard

With the utterance of a single line—“Doctor Livingstone, I presume?”—a remote meeting in the heart of Africa was transformed into one of the most famous encounters in exploration history. But the true story behind Dr. David Livingstone and journalist Henry Morton Stanley is one that has escaped telling. Into Africa is an extraordinarily researched account of a thrilling adventure—defined by alarming foolishness, intense courage, and raw human achievement.

In the mid-1860s, exploration had reached a plateau. The seas and continents had been mapped, the globe circumnavigated. Yet one vexing puzzle remained unsolved: what was the source of the mighty Nile river? Aiming to settle the mystery once and for all, Great Britain called upon its legendary explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, who had spent years in Africa as a missionary. In March 1866, Livingstone steered a massive expedition into the heart of Africa. In his path lay nearly impenetrable, uncharted terrain, hostile cannibals, and deadly predators. Within weeks, the explorer had vanished without a trace. Years passed with no word.

While debate raged in England over whether Livingstone could be found—or rescued—from a place as daunting as Africa, James Gordon Bennett, Jr., the brash American newspaper tycoon, hatched a plan to capitalize on the world’s fascination with the missing legend. He would send a young journalist, Henry Morton Stanley, into Africa to search for Livingstone. A drifter with great ambition, but little success to show for it, Stanley undertook his assignment with gusto, filing reports that would one day captivate readers and dominate the front page of the New York Herald.

Tracing the amazing journeys of Livingstone and Stanley in alternating chapters, author Martin Dugard captures with breathtaking immediacy the perils and challenges these men faced. Woven into the narrative, Dugard tells an equally compelling story of the remarkable transformation that occurred over the course of nine years, as Stanley rose in power and prominence and Livingstone found himself alone and in mortal danger. The first book to draw on modern research and to explore the combination of adventure, politics, and larger-than-life personalities involved, Into Africa is a riveting read.

From Publishers Weekly
It is rare when a historical narrative keeps readers up late into the night, especially when the story is as well known as Henry Morgan Stanley's search for the missionary and explorer David Livingstone. But author and adventurer Dugard, who's written a biography of Capt. James Cook among other works, makes a suspenseful tale out of journalist Stanley's successful trek through the African interior to find and rescue a stranded Livingstone. Dugan has read extensively in unpublished diaries, newspapers of the time and the archives of Britain's Royal Geographical Society; he also visited the African locations central to the story. Together these sources enable him to re-create with immediacy the astounding hardships, both natural and manmade, that Africa put in the path of the two central characters. Dugard also presents thoughtful insights into the psychology of both Stanley and Livingstone, whose respective responses to Africa could not have differed more. Stanley was bent on beating Africa with sheer force of will, matching it brutality for brutality, while Livingstone, possessed of spirituality and a preternatural absence of any fear of death, responded to the continent's harshness with patience and humility. Descriptions of the African landscape are vivid, as are the descriptions of malaria, dysentery, sleeping sickness, insect infestations, monsoons and tribal wars, all of which Stanley and Livingstone faced. More disturbing, however is Dugard's depiction of the prosperous Arab slave trade, which creates a sense of menace that often reaches Conradian intensity. This is a well-researched, always engrossing book.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-A superb tale of adventure, heroism, and suffering. Dugard provides essential background information between generous servings of heart-pounding excitement. The story begins in the spring of 1866 as David Livingstone was leaving Zanzibar for Mikindary to begin his search for the source of the Nile. Meanwhile, Henry Stanley, an unremarkable freelance writer, embarked on his own adventure, a journey east from Colorado that began by rafting the South Platte River. He hoped for a career as a newspaper reporter in New York. The activities of each man are described in alternate chapters. Rich biographical detail contributes to readers' understanding of the men's backgrounds and characters. This is not a tale for the squeamish: exhausted men slogging through fetid swamps succumb to horrifying diseases; roving bandits mutilate and devour their captives. Using the men's detailed journals, the archives of the Royal Geographic Society, newspaper reports, an impressive collection of secondary sources, and a few black-and-white photographs, the author provides readers with a picture of the time that is as compelling as the story of the search. Details about the role of newspapers, the management of ships, the debates about slavery, and many other topics enrich this book. The volume ends with the burial of Livingstone in Westminster Abbey, but an epilogue provides brief notes on the remainder of the lives of the other major figures in the story.

A Must Read!
By William Baker
Having extensively read about these two accomplished and highly recognized explorers and having traveled the area where Stanley set out to search for Livingstone, I was both excited and anxious to read Mr. Dugard's book. My expectations were high as I opened the first page. To say the least, Mr. Dugard's excellent narrative, thorough research and personal exploration into the minds of the two heroes truly surpassed my hopes for an interesting and enlightening journey into this well known story. Into Africa is not only a combination of adventure and biography, but Mr. Dugard adds interesting insight into the soul of Stanely and Livingstone. Mr. Dugard's writing is rich and flows with compelling descriptions and details. The read is both educational and very entertaining. Although the subject is historical, the book is not the least bit dry and technical, such as Ambroses' Undaunted Courage. Mr. Dugard's style of writing wisks the reader through the personal lives and adventures of not only Stanley and Livingstone, but many of the important secondary characters who had a great affect on Stanley and Livingstone's successes, (ie Kirk, Murchison, Bennett, etc.). The key element that makes this book a great read is Mr. Dugard's relentess and extensive research. His use of Stanley and Livingstones personal journals, letters, obscure newspaper articles, letters and diary entries of Stanley and Livingstone's associates and his own personal reflections and observations helps provide the reader with an accurate and precise account of what truly led to the utterance of that immortal phrase..."Dr. Livingtsone, I presume."

The Problem With Presumption
By Bruce Loveitt
Here's what I knew (or thought I knew) before I read this book: David Livingstone was a missionary who, after many years of trying, converted almost no Africans to Christianity. He got sidetracked into trying his luck at exploration....and didn't have much luck. He mainly wandered around, not accomplishing much. Henry Morton Stanley went looking for Livingstone as a newspaper "publicity stunt." He had a lot of money behind him and found Livingstone without too much trouble. Later on in life he went back to Africa and debased himself by working for the notorious King Leopold of Belgium, helping to set up the infamous slave-labor colony in the Congo. He was, even before he went to the Congo, a cruel racist. Although maybe I shouldn't admit to my ignorance, that's pretty much what I "knew." Some of the above turned out to be true, some of it didn't, as I discovered after reading this book. It is true Livingstone didn't have much luck with conversions, even though he spent a good portion of the last 30 years of his life in Africa. He was, however, a better explorer than I realized. He was the first white man to walk across Africa, doing so from east to west. From 1841-1851 he explored the deserts, rivers and lakes of Southern Africa. From 1858-1863 he explored the Zambezi river and the area to the north of the river. It is true that he didn't accomplish 2 of the main goals he had set for himself. He hoped, by his explorations, to open up the African interior to economic development which would eliminate the slave trade. This didn't happen during his lifetime. He even compromised his principles and accepted food and hospitality from Arab slave traders as his second goal became his primary goal, and even an obsession- to find the source of the Nile. He was about 600 miles too far to the south, and never found what he was looking for. Indeed, after being found by Stanley, Livingstone remained in Africa and died in pursuit of his obsession. Despite these failures, Livingstone did map quite a bit of Africa and measured the height of, and gave the English name to, Victoria Falls. Stanley, while undoubtedly a racist- he beat his porters for little or no reason- did not have an easy time finding Livingstone. As Mr. Dugard makes clear, Stanley relentlessly made his way through jungles, swamps and savannah, having to deal with crocodiles, lions, hyenas, and tsetse flies along the way. He survived bouts of malaria and dysentery, encounters with cannibals, an attempted rebellion by his men, and porters running off with essential supplies. He also wound up in the middle of a war between Arab slave traders and various African tribes. He was genuinely fond of Livingstone and didn't just stick around to say, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" He spent five months with Livingstone, bringing essential supplies so that Livingstone could go on with his explorations. Stanley later, in 1874, returned to Africa and circumnavigated both Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika and followed the Congo River all the way to the Atlantic. These were remarkable achievements. Do they absolve Stanley of the sin of helping to establish Leopold's nightmarish Belgian Congo? No they don't....but they were still remarkable achievements. This book works very well as an adventure story, but it is more than that. The author didn't just look at the books that Stanley and Livingstone wrote for public view. He also looked at the journals of the two men. Thus, we are privy to their most inner thoughts and disappointments. Livingstone was guilty about not having spent more time at home in England with his wife and children. (His wife was so lonely she came to Africa to join him in 1861. She died from malaria in 1862.) He also, however, despite his reputation as a "pure of heart" missionary, was very sexually active with African women. He himself estimated that he had enjoyed the favors of 300 natives. Stanley was the result of a liaison between his prostitute mother and one of her customers. He was dumped in a workhouse by uncaring relatives and was sexually abused by his fellow inmates. His journals, unsurprisingly, show a man wracked by insecurity and depression, warding off thoughts of suicide by keeping himself constantly busy. Mr. Dugard speculates that part of the appeal for Stanley in finding Livingstone (and his affection for Livingstone once they met) was his desperate need for a father figure. (Livingstone was about 30 years older than Stanley.) Considering Stanley's upbringing, this speculation does not seem far-fetched. One problem this otherwise fine book does have is that is suffers from a lack of maps. The only map in the book is printed on the inside cover. It is ok but not really detailed, and it is awkward to get to. As most of the chapters get into a lot of detail regarding where Stanley and Livingstone are at any particular moment, it would have been much better to have more maps scattered throughout the book. In any event, after reading this excellent combination of adventure tale/ dual biography, I feel a little less ignorant than before. Not a bad thing!

Disease, dangerous animals, warring tribes, disgruntled employees, and other hazards of being a 19th century explorer in Africa.
By Bernie Gourley
“Doctor Livingstone, I presume?” These iconic words are culturally embedded in the psyche of Americans (and, I assume, the British as well), but I had only a vague understanding of their meaning before reading Dugard’s account of the two expeditions that would bring the phrase into household immortality—the first of which was Dr. David Livingstone’s search to once-and-for-all find the source of the Nile and the other was Henry Stanley’s search to discover whether Livingstone was still alive.

If one isn’t a diehard history buff, it can be hard to maintain one’s interest in events of almost 150 years ago. Let me assure you, this isn’t the case for stories of African explanation—including “Into Africa.” If the author is at all skilled, these books read like novels with an almost improbably high level and pace of tension. That’s because almost everything in Africa in those days was working against the explorer, and most things were actively trying to kill him. A summary of threats include: a panoply of diseases (e.g. malaria, dysentery, etc.), an ark of animals and insects (e.g. poisonous snakes, lions, elephants, rhinos, etc.), and of course tribes and other humans (e.g. one could find oneself caught in the cross-fire between Arab slave traders and tribes who resented being enslaved, even if one had no stake in the fight.) And if none of those killers got one (and at least some of them always did), your men might desert you in the middle of the night while absconding with all your goods—and those goods were how one paid for both one’s food and for safe passage through tribal lands. In Dugard’s work, one sees each of these threats played and replayed, as well as a host of others from political conflicts, incompetence, and disgruntledness. It should be noted that there was almost no precedence for sending someone to look for a lost explorer—it was considered so unlikely to succeed in that era, not to mention likely getting a lot more killed.

The book largely alternates chapters featuring Stanley with those featuring Livingstone. This is particularly the case once the book reaches the point at which Stanley is actively on the trail. These were very different men, but the name of each man became synonymous with courage. Stanley was an American journalist who made it to the top based solely on willingness to go places and do things other reporters wouldn’t. In fact, he had trouble making a go of his career starting out, and it wasn’t until a traumatic adventure that he developed the assertiveness to make something of himself. Livingstone was already a legend when he took on this expedition, and was arguably too far past prime to be taking on such an adventure. The men were also quite different as expedition leaders. Stanley ran his caravan with an iron fist, while Livingstone was known for being lax and easily distracted—while they were at opposite end of the spectrum in this regard, it seems likely that both would have succeeded better with more moderation.

At the book’s beginning there’s a conflict at the Royal Geographical Society between Richard Burton (the explorer, not the actor) and John Speke over the source of the Nile. Livingston, a living legend, was asked to investigate and settle the issue—an objective he didn’t complete. It should be noted that finding the river’s source isn’t as easy as it sounds. Speke was correct in that the Nile reached at least to Lake Victoria (at the equator), but it wasn’t clear whether Victoria was connected to other lakes in the southern hemisphere, and—if so—how far down it went. There was a chain of lakes to the south that might have drained into the Nile, but, as it happens, flow into the Congo River.

I found this to be fascinating reading. The book consists of 40 chapters divided among five parts, and so most of the chapters are quick reads and the interspersal of the Stanley and Livingstone story lines keeps the pacing going nicely. Dugard did a good job structuring the narrative.

I’d recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about Stanley, Livingstone or who just want to know what it was like to be an explorer on the Dark Continent. [Fun-fact: While “dark continent” sounds blatantly racist, it turns out that the phrase was originally used in reference to the fact that so much of the map was blank—i.e. it was largely unmapped.]

Jitney, by August Wilson

"The best play of the new year—by a hop, skip, and a mile! Speaking to us with such generous heart. . ." (John Heilpern, New York Observer)

"This Jitney is a transport of delight. So vividly written, . . . it keeps you steadily amused, concerned, and moved." (John Simon, New York Magazine)

A thoroughly revised version of a play August Wilson first wrote in 1979, Jitney was produced in New York for the first time in the spring of 2000, winning rave reviews and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award as the Best Play of the Year. Set in the 1970s in Pittsburgh's Hill District, and depicting gypsy cabdrivers who serve black neighborhoods, Jitney is the seventh in Wilson's projected 10-play cycle (one for each decade) on the black experience in twentieth century America. He writes not about historical events or the pathologies of the black community, but, as he says, about "the unique particulars of black culture . . . I wanted to place this culture onstage in all its richness and fullness and to demonstrate its ability to sustain us . . . through profound moments in our history in which the larger society has thought less of us than we have thought of ourselves."

"You want to make something of your life, then the opportunity is there."
By doc peterson
_Jitney_ is set in 1977: the energy crisis is in full swing, and the nation is heading towards a recession. In Pittsburgh, Becker runs the jitney station - an underground, unofficial taxi serving the African-American community. The pace of the play is slow and meditative as the jitney drivers banter and run the dozens on each other; the plot is subtle - the drivers are working-class men simply trying to make ends meet, each with very different perspectives on where life is taking them. Youngblood is a Vietnam veteran who is struggling to realize the "American dream," hoping to buy a house for the mother of his child. Becker, the owner of the jitney station is facing its closure by the city and the recent release of his son, Booster, from prison. Booster is starting his life anew after serving 20 years for murder.

As these characters tease and verbally spar with each other, Wilson shows a variety of perspectives on the African-American experience in the late 20th century. As Youngblood put it, "If you can't change the way you look at me ... then I might as well surrender now. I can't beat your memory of who I was if you can't see I've changed. ... no matter what I do, I can't never do it right, 'cause all you see is the way I used to be. ... You don't see I've changed." This is echoed by Booster, who later in the play says, "... I decided right then that dreams didn't mean anything in this world. You could be the president or a bishop or something like that. You can dream you got more money than Rockerfeller. See what happens when you wake up." In spite of these broken dreams and the sense of inevitable failure, Wilson continues to offer hope to his characters, much as America continues to offer hope to its downtrodden.

The barbershop banter and lack of action makes for a pensive piece, much more so than many of Wilson's other plays. It is a powerful play nonetheless.

Great start to a new series
By DIANE J
I was a little wary about buying the book, I don't generally but much mystery/suspense. However, when I realized the book was by Patricia McLinn (I have really enjoyed her books in the past), I decided to give it a chance. I really enjoyed it. I read it in one sitting. I hadn't planned it that way, but just couldn't stop once I was in the middle. The characters really made me care about them. I can hardly wait for the next one in the series.

This is better-quality than many small-town mysteries. A deputy who vanishes in his pickup truck amid Wyoming mountains and a TV reporter who used to be an investigative journalist are at the core of the tale. Deputy Foster Redus, who had a way with the ladies but didn't respect them, was last seen after Thanksgiving but is still missing when Elizabeth Danniher arrives at Sherman's small TV station in April. Elizabeth had been working in NY but has been demoted since her divorce until she sorts out her life. Then a determined young girl asks her for help, despite the fact that the help she gives is officially limited to consumer affairs.

Tamanda Burrell thinks her father is unfairly blamed for the deputy's disappearance - he has lost business and friends, and will lose joint custody of Tamanda if his ex-wife has her way. Redus had been seeing Tamanda's mother, giving Burrell motive. Only a brusque investigation was carried out by the sheriff and Elizabeth has to wonder why the local law enforcement wasn't more interested in finding one of their own. Aided by Mike, a younger reporter who wants mentoring, she hones her rusty investigative skills and interviews everyone in town. Mike's aunt who works in the sheriff's office is a source of unofficial gossip and Deputy Alvarez is also helpful, but the more influential citizens generally stymie the reporters. The women Redus had been with somehow each believe he was coming back for them, though resentful of his other conquests. Then Redus's truck and body are found pushed off a mountain road, and matters take a more sinister turn.

The setting is excellently described, from the struggle to make ranches pay to the mineral resources, the artery-clogging food and long empty sweeping vistas. Elizabeth is a sympathetic and believable character as is Mike, a ball player who retired when his knees gave trouble, but has plenty of resources and brains to carry on his second career. And behind the scenes at the TV station is never dull, what with the anchorman and other reporters afraid Elizabeth will steal their careers and sabotaging her slots, but the stalwart camera operator Diana supporting her.
I spotted a few twists being flagged, and found it hard to believe that a young man would be so upset by the secret of his sexuality being discovered that he would kill himself - would he not just go to work in a city? But bullying does cause deaths among young people and it may be that this could happen in Wyoming. I also found the ending less than believable with the reporters managing to get important personages on camera while they accused someone of murder. Wouldn't they all say no comment, want my lawyer, get out? But maybe she couldn't think of another way to force the sheriff's hand.

McLinn was editor at the Washington Post for more than 20 years and has many previous books to her credit. Crime fans will agree that this is an excellent read, turning quickly from light to tragic and with plenty of human touches.

4.5 star read
By K. Branfield
Sign Off, the first book in P.A. McLinn's Caught Dead in Wyoming series, is a fast-paced and intriguing mystery. Unable to resist her curiosity (and Tamantha Burrell), Elizabeth Danniher and sportscaster Mike Paycik look into the disappearance of Deputy Foster Redus. Did he leave under his own volition? Or did Foster meet with foul play? Their investigation exposes corruption, dirty politics and secrets that might just drive a person to kill to keep hidden.

Elizabeth Danniher's exile in small town Sherman, WY is only a temporary setback following her divorce and the subsequent loss of her network job. Dealing with the petty jealousies of an insecure anchorman and some of her co-workers, Elizabeth is trying to make a success of her "Helping Out" segment. When second grader Tamantha Burrell approaches Elizabeth and asks her to help prove her father's innocence in Foster's disappearance, Elizabeth is reluctantly drawn into investigating the unsolved case. The further she delves into the case, the more inconsistencies she uncovers in the original investigation and she easily slips back into full investigative journalist mode. Stonewalled by the police and hindered by interoffice feuds, Elizabeth is determined to uncover the truth surrounding Foster's untimely disappearance. When Mike Paycik offers her an inside track to information, Elizabeth reluctantly joins forces with the ambitious sportscaster.

Elizabeth is a beautiful developed and engaging protagonist. She is caring and compassionate with an innate sense of justice. Trying to adjust to rural living is not easy and as she navigates uncharted territory, Elizabeth provides a humorous view of the inner workings of a television station, small town life and its politics.

Equally likeable is the charming and resourceful Mike Paycik. Mike is a local man who returned to Sherman after a knee injury ended his football career. His interest in Elizabeth is more than professional (much to her dismay) and I enjoyed the byplay between them as they delve into mystery surrounding the missing deputy.

Deputy Foster Redus is a completely reprehensible character. With motives and suspects quickly piling up, Elizabeth and Mike go round and round in circles trying to figure out who had the most compelling reason to get rid of the despicable deputy.

Sign Off is an entertaining story with a compelling storyline and a wonderful cast of characters. The mystery aspect of the novel is especially well done with many twists and turns and a suspect list a mile long. P.A. McLinn has a fabulous writing style and she brings the small town of Sherman, WY and its inhabitants vibrantly to life. I am eager to see what lies ahead for Elizabeth, Mike, and the other residents I met in this wonderful first installment of the Caught Dead in Wyoming series.

An excellent beginning to a promising new series that I highly recommend.

I received a complimentary copy for review.

Marlon Brando: A Memoir, by Nancy K. Peardon

"...[Nancy's] proven herself to be a lasting and loyal friend and someone that's worthy of being a personal confidant...I love her children, I hate her husband, for reasons I won't bother with now, mostly because he's there and I'm not. I would trust her with my money and my shorts" --Marlon Brando

A young woman meets Marlon Brando while working as an assistant in her father's Beverly Hills dental office. It's 1976. Brando's a screen legend. The twenty year old is enraptured by the fifty-two year old star of such classic American films as A Streetcar Named Desire, Viva Zapata!, The Wild One, On the Waterfront, The Godfather, and Last Tango in Paris. Brando's as dazzled by her-"I think I'm falling in love," he sighs, taking her hand in his to kiss-and on that day, he and Nancy Peardon embark on an intimate and tempestuous relationship that was to last another twenty-eight years until the actor's death in 2004.

Serving as Brando's on-again, off-again executive assistant, Peardon becomes his steadfast confidante, experiencing a side of the famously private actor few know about or could ever discern from his memorable roles, from Stanley Kowalski to Vito Corleone. He was mischievous, principled, idiosyncratic, volatile, enigmatic, fierce in his views on everything from the film industry to international affairs, but ultimately as vulnerable as a child. Marlon Brando: A Memoir explores Marlon Brando the man, behind Marlon Brando the myth, from the vantage point of someone who knew him like no other.

Review
"Their interactions are funny, shocking, and sad (especially as the actor's health deteriorated), and, more importantly, never gossipy or frivolous...Beyond simply humanizing Brando or elaborating upon his legacy, this memoir shows how complicated truly great friendships can be, and how rare genuine people are to come by. It is a warm, engaging book that begs to be shared." -- Film Comment|Film Society of Lincoln Center

"A fascinating must-read for Brando fans." --Publishers Weekly

"Their interactions are funny, shocking, and sad (especially as the actor's health deteriorated), and, more importantly, never gossipy or frivolous...Beyond simply humanizing Brando or elaborating upon his legacy, this memoir shows how complicated truly great friendships can be, and how rare genuine people are to come by. It is a warm, engaging book that begs to be shared." -- Violet Lucca, Film Comment

Another side of Brando
By Ralfonso
The Author was the daughter of Brando's dentist. She was 20 years old when they
met and he was 52.Their relationship lasted close to 30 years but according to her
they never had sex because she said Brando didn't want to find another dentist.Brando
was compulsive about his habits, whether it was food, sex,or when he was slighted
by his friends. He called her at work,at her home (even though she was married)and
over the years was employed and fired by him twice.
She comes across as a weak individual lacking confidence in her early years. Her
husband was an alcoholic and Brando warned her against marring him but she did
not heed his advice. Some of the conversations are interesting but also perverse,
Brando coming across as a serial manipulator and a misogynist. She comes across
as a victim and he in his words a "monster".
This book more or less reinforces information previously written about him but it is
still fascinating why we should still care about him after his death.

Marlon Brando: A Memoir
By Daniel F. Rousseau
Hemingway, in his preface to THE SNOWS OF KILAMANJARO, says that on the peak of the 19,710-foot Mount Kilamanjaro was found the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. He adds, "No one has ever explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude."
Nancy Peardon's MARLON BRANDO: A MEMOIR, offers to us the highly intelligent and sensitive Brando who, like Hemingway's leopard, sought his answers at the highest of altitudes - on the altar of pure friendship. And for nearly thirty years, he tested his friendship with Ms. Peardon, sometimes turning away, but always returning.
Trust is the core of any relationship, and Nancy Peardon has not violated that trust. In MARLON BRANDO: A MEMOIR, she has offered to us the man whose sensitive nature not only made him a great actor, but a true friend to those who proved themselves worthy.

a different look at brando
By david in FL
i've read most of the brando books and this is a welcome fresh perspective. it is not a standard bio, but a memoir and love story. she was the daughter of brando's dentist. they met when she was 20 and knew each other until his death 28 years later.
"he allowed me to love the man who lived sequestered behind the unfathomable persona of marlon brando," she writes, "and he made me feel unconditionally loved in return."
here's what he told her once: "nancy, you must understand, there are only five people in this world that i trust. and, as it turns out, you're one of those five people."
but their relationship wasn't always easy. he once locked her in the trunk of his car, just for sport. that anecdote, and others i'd read elsewhere about his mistreatment of people, brings to mind blanche dubois' words about deliberate cruelty -- "it is the one unforgivable thing." but peardon forgave and/or gave back during their quarrels.
one thing that distinguishes this book is its up close and personal nature. another is the graceful writing. other reviewers have mentioned her candor. indeed, you appreciate her honesty. she doesn't seem to have left much out. you'll come to like her as you read this book. as for brando, exasperating, charming and dozens of other adjectives. i liked this vignette about his dog:
"i witnessed marlon and tim sharing many secrets during tim's lifetime. marlon would whisper in tim's ear, and i'd watch tim raise one eyebrow, as he'd hold his giant mastiff head very still and listen. only his eyebrow would indicate the import of some of their secrets."
peardon and brando's friendship started with a 4 1/2 hour phone call that went until 3 a.m., after which he tried to persuade her to go to the beach to watch the sun rise. the book ends with his memorial service, sensitively described.

The Byrds – My Way
By James “Jimmi” Seiter

Description

The Byrds – My Way (Volume 3) is a first-hand description of the inner workings of the Byrds and Burrito Brothers and other entertainment events: written by James ‘Jimmi’ Seiter (Road Manager, production manager and much more for many bands and events). It sets the record and previous assumptions straight as to what was really going on, from detailed personal, first-hand experience. He takes you on his journey which began in 1966; telling his version of events as he lived them in the form of 58 stories. It elaborates on the hard work that went on behind the scenes, to make the magic of music happen on stage in those days. The book series will recount the daily happenings of a few of America’s foremost Rock/Folk/Pop bands of the 1960’s & 1970’s as well as other production stories which the author was personally involved with along the way. This is Volume 3 there are many more to come so stay tuned and there is a website www.jimmiseiter.com which also has many historical photos.

This book is meant to be a series of 10 volumes. It begins with the Byrds, continues on to the Burrito Brothers (which was a spin off band from the Byrds) then back to the Byrds. It moves on to working with Terry Melcher, Bruce Johnston, Brian Wilson, Alice Cooper, David Cassidy, and back to the Burrito Bros. II. Then into the live recording & Studio recording industries with artists. The author’s path has also crossed with many other great artists such as Stevie Wonder, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, and John Denver, to name a few.

The main aim of this book is to report the facts as they happened, through the eyes of the author. After being interviewed (and misquoted) by numerous writers over the years, then reading their interpretation of events, it became clear that people could only report what they had been told, because they were not there. The writing is presented as fact and soon the general public takes it as such: but if one tries to justify some of the shows in the day to day accounts, it becomes obvious that the authors had access to old information or preliminary schedules, not what actually happened. The ‘facts’ are simply not accurate, but because it is written, fans believe it. So yes, bits and pieces of this story have been told, but not as this author knows it. This body of work has been written purely from memory, over a period of 20 years, directly from someone who lived it. It has been a long time coming because someone had to step up and say it out loud.

Jimmi Seiter, my way
By Stephen Goodman
These first 3 volumes are mislabelled--they are not so much about the Byrds as they are about Jimmi Seiter. The comments on the original Byrds are pretty much one-dimensional--Crosby is a loner and a troublemaker, Clarke is the only fun guy (but a bad drummer), Hillman is pretty much anonymous, and McGuinn is the villain. The real hero is Jimmi Seiter, a great-but-underappreciated road manager (his version) and a hit with the 'ladies', as he calls them. Maybe it's all true, but it does get a little tiresome when he pats himself on the back again and again. The narrative style ('my way', like Frank Sinatra?) needed a proper editor, not only for the multiple language errors, but also for the organization of the events in the text, which is very casual, to say the least.
Yet for all its faults, it's often a fascinating read, and a detailed record of the California music scene in the mid-to-late-60s. Seiter has a prodigious memory, judging from all the details he puts into his story, and while he occasionally goes overboard (esp. in the party scenes in Vol. 1), he provides a fascinating glimpse of the music and musicians, including the Byrds, which made such fine music in this period. Seiter also gives an insider's look into the roles of a road manager and what he has to do to make a road trip a success.
I hope future volumes give more attention to the Byrds themselves--as an insider, he should have much more to say about the individuals than he has so far.

AT TIMES ILLUMINATING, MOST OFTEN NOT SO
By Joseph A. Kengor
I'm guessing Jimmi Seiter never made it beyond 6th or 7th grade in school. It's plainly evident in his writing which screams for an editor's guiding hand. So much repetitive balderdash. No wonder no major publishing house touched these volumes. There's such a limited demographic for the information contained herein anyway. Jimmi should've never attempted to be roadie and road manager - too much work for one guy. But the problem with reading these volumes - there is so much meaningless dreck to wade through to find one little interesting tidbit. (I began with volume 3 and I'm nearly finished.) Jimmi is now an elderly man and in need of some retirement funds I imagine, so I don't begrudge him this opportunity and by buying volumes 3 thru 5 I've helped him a little. He busted his butt for the Byrds. I'm guessing all proposed 10 volumes could be condensed into one book. Go to Cypresscowboy.com to buy the paperback copies and some interesting Byrds t-shirt options.

Poor Little Daddy's Girl (The Daddy's Girl Series) (Volume 3), by Normandie Alleman

Twenty-four-year-old Charmaine Bainbridge appears to have it all—beauty, fame, and tremendous wealth—yet behind all the glitz and glamor hides a sad little girl who has been abandoned by every man she’s ever loved.

When firefighter Hunter Baldwin saves Charmaine from a fire in her penthouse apartment—a blaze started by her own carelessness—he’s appalled by her nonchalant attitude. Forced to carry her to safety, he throws her over his shoulder, but not before correcting her behavior with a well-deserved spanking. Something about Charmaine arouses him deeply, and it isn’t just her gorgeous looks. This girl needs to be firmly corrected and thoroughly dominated, and a part of Hunter demands that he be the one to take her in hand.

Though he’s used to charging into burning buildings on a daily basis, Hunter knows taming Charmaine’s wild ways may prove to be his greatest challenge yet. Undeterred, he takes on the role of Charmaine’s daddy dom in hopes of breaking down her defenses and healing her wounds. But can she bring herself to open her heart to him, or will she remain the lonely little rich girl forever?

Publisher’s Note: Poor Little Daddy’s Girl is the third book in the Daddy’s Girl series. It incorporates characters from the first two books in the series, but it is a stand-alone novel. This book includes spankings, sexual scenes, BDSM content, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

Review by Heidi Lynn

Thank you to NH Kuhn and Normandie Alleman for providing with an advanced copy of this book so I could bring you this review. Poor Little Daddies Girl by Normandine Alleman had me cracking up laughing at some of Charmaine’s and Hunter’s dialog. Who says, “Who peed in your Cheerio’s?” My favorite line was “You know you’re about as much fun as a colonoscopy with no drugs.” Charmaine is your typical wealthy, spoiled brat who gets into trouble and is only famous to be famous. She is lonely, on a destructive path, and dates all the wrong men for her. That is until Hunter a hunky firefighter rescues her from her apartment fire. The apartment is not the only thing that sparks a flame! I love how Normadie describes all the naughty scenes between the two characters. As they say firefighters find them hott and leave them wet! That is exactly what these two characters did! Poor Little Daddies Girl by Normadie Alleman gets 4 out of 5 hot steamy kisses from me.

A nice surprise.

This is by far the best book of the series so far. A definite keeper. The first two where ok I liked them. This one goes the extra mile as it were. There's a few things I started to say, but I back spaced I HATE SPOILERS. The voice reader or whatever you call them was good as well.

Best One So Far!
By Joanne Jones
Right where do I begin apart from saying THANK YOU NORMANDIE!!! This book is her best so far and written so well.
So let me begin my review of this deliciously hot addictive read and I mean oh my god this is smoking hot that even I felt like fanning myself hehe
I've always said that Daddy's Game by Normandie was my go to for a naughty read and that it was my favourite but Natron and Carmen...you gotta go!! Because there is a new couple in town and they are taking over everything!
In this book we have the very 'oh god lord' handsome Hunter, he is a firefighter we met in Daddy's game and he is also the big gorgeous hero who saved Charmaine after she was a very careless naughty girl!! I will continue about Hunter but first can I just say that I think Hunter is the best Daddy so far!! Just putting that out there lol
This book had me at start to finish and it's my favourite one now because these two made me laugh and made me blush but also made me weep.

Hunter firefighter with a taste for dominance in the bedroom, but never found someone who he could be his true self with but he is also kind and funny, he is someone you can trust and he would never lead you down the wrong path. Along with all of that is his mouth is like a sailor at sea hehe he is a very crude talking dirty man!!

Charmaine is a rich spoilt party girl who mainly loves to drink and do all the wrong things for herself but her love for her close friends is lovely to read, she cares so deeply for them and that is enough to call family but she is missing out on one thing and that is companionship!
I wasn't a big fan of her in Daddy Morebucks but in this one I loved her, now I know what's happened and reading her thoughts and feelings, I've seen her in a different light and I think she should get all the happiness in the world.

All in all, this is a great read for anyone who has all different kinks up their alley, Normandie done it again and wrote a brilliant book and one that will be my go to. I can't wait to read more by her.
