Investigative journalist Sam Cleave finds himself running from the site of an execution he barely escapes. His longtime friend, Dr. Nina Gould, is contracted by a Czech anthropologist and heiress to search for a lost Nazi treasure stolen from her family and taken to Romania, and she invites Sam to join them on their excursion.

They learn that the item is a deck of tarot cards from antique Prague, said to have the ability to alter time and space to the will of the person who lays out the spread, thus undoing history and reshuffling physics to change the world to suit whomever owns the deck - therefore an invaluable treasure to the Order of the Black Sun Nazi organization.

Their pursuit of the item leads them to Sam Cleave, already on their hit list, but what they do not know is that their employer, a secret member of the Black Sun, has other plans for the evil tarot cards. She employs the talents of a 10 year old homeless street thief to help her attain power by teaching him how to work the tarot.

While Sam and Nina help their Czech employer to locate the cards, they are subjected to the inexplicable and ominous forces of the Hoia Baciu forest of Transylvania, reputed to be the most haunted forest in the world. It was here where the last owner of the deck met his end, so they have to enter the embrace of the devilish woodlands to seek the wicked cards that could thwart history and bring about unbridled chaos to the world.

They have to find the deck before the wrong faction does, but in their midst a traitor lurks to fulfil his own ideals and a series of strange occurrences prove that someone else is using the cards already.

Child is a mediocre author who has decided to use trickery as opposed to talent to further his or her career ($$$). It is an intentional misdirection! Actually, I would have rated the book two stars but I don't like being deceived.

About the Author

Her other books for Pearson Education include Starting Out on the Internet: A Learning Journey for Teachers; Technology Tools for Teachers: A Microsoft Office Tutorial (with Steven C. Mills); Educational Technology in Action: Problem-based Exercises for Technology Integration, and Introduction to Systematic Instructional Design for Traditional, Online, and Blended Environments. Currently, Dr. Roblyer is Adjunct Professor of Instructional Technology and Distance Education (ITDE) at Nova Southeastern University, chairing dissertations for ITDE doctoral students. She serves on editorial boards of various technology and research journals, is past-president of two AERA Special Interest Groups, and current officer in AERA’s Online Teaching and Learning SIG. Her current research focus is on understanding student success in virtual school environments and exploring ways to increase interactive qualities in virtual courses. She is married to William R. Wiencke and is the mother of a daughter, Paige.

Pearson is a Greedy Moneygrubbing Publishing Company!

I was required to buy this for a class. The $100 loose leaf version offered no access to the online "check your understanding quizzes" or any other videos or links that were in the book. I contacted Pearson and they said that the loose leaf version, even though it was very expensive, did not include those features. Boo Pearson! Way to fulfill the stereotype of the greedy publishing company!

Avec les enfants, j'ai joué au jeu roi du bidonville, le cerf-volant, fait de pauvres morceaux de carton et de tissus qui emportent par-dessus la grisaille des toits tous les rêves de ce peuple d'emmurés. J'ai participé aux naissances, aux mariages, aux crémations, aux fêtes des hindous, des musulmans, des sikhs, des chrétiens et de toutes les communautés de cette mosaïque de peuples et de religions. J'ai tiré des rickshaws et roulé des "bidi' dans les ateliers-bagnes où des enfants de six et sept ans confectionnent plus de douze cents cigarettes par jour. J'ai fait la queue entre minuit et trois heures du matin pour aller aux latrines (il y a une latrines pour 2500 habitants) et j'ai appris à me laver de la tête aux pieds avec moins d'un demi-litre d'eau. Surtout, surtout, j'ai appris à garder toujours le sourire, à remercier Dieu pour le moindre bienfait, à écouter les autres, à ne pas avoir peur de la mort, à ne jamais désespérer."Dominique Lapierre

Allen Rubin has been doing and teaching research since 1976, when he received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Renowned in social work, Dr. Rubin has written several research texts, published numerous research studies on social work practice, and is a past president of the Society for Social Work and Research.

Muddled prose, can lead students into statistical errors

I wanted to like this book. The title is great for the course I will be teaching. I quickly found problems, but felt 'well, I can teach around that point.' After working through 100 or so pages I began to ask myself: "If I have to struggle at understanding what the author should be saying, how will students possibly understand?" There are many examples, but I will give one for stat teachers who might read this. EVERYONE who teaches stat knows that we do not prove the null hypothesis; we merely reject it or let it stand. Rubin instead goes through a discussion (see p. 102) about why we would not "confirm the null hypothesis." The discussion centers on the idea that the probability found might be 0.15 or 0.20 ---- that suggests, he says, that we cannot be sure that the null is true. He thus tempts the student to think, "well, if I calculate a t or r and find the probability to be 0.80, maybe then I have shown the null to be true." What EVERYONE, author, teacher, and student, should say is that with small sample sizes, we will often not reject really false null hypotheses. Instead, all we need to do, as implied by Rubin, is test a small sample discover that a very large probability, and presto, we have confirmed the null hypothesis. (SPSS results will provide such large probabilities even though they are not available in t, F, etc. tables in stat books.)
Regretfully, I am still looking for a text for the Spring class.

Reads terrible

I am almost through my statistics class and if it wasn't for the tutor, teacher, and fellow classmates I would have struggled with just reading this book. It jumps all over the place and over examples things. ARG! is how I felt every time I read it.

Overall, a good textbook for statistics in social work practice

This is a good basic text to learn statistics for social work research. I am giving it 3 stars because there are some areas where I found the authors to go into great length to explain things that are more confusing than helpful. These areas that I found confusing were not covered in my graduate school stats class, and I therefore found it unnecessarily complicating the already daunting subject. Overall, the authors are great teachers in their clarity of writing style, presentation of information, and ability to explain complex matters to a wide audience.

In my book: "Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide", I fully explore the spiritual side-effects of trauma, and how the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is a powerful systematic approach for the trauma survivor seeking a spiritual solution.

About the Author

For years, designer Golden Krishna has been behind the scenes, solving technology problems for companies from startups to Fortune 50. He’s currently a Senior UX Designer at Zappos Labs, where he works in a small group dedicated to creating new, delightful experiences for Zappos. Previously, he worked at a Samsung innovation lab, designing and building the near future of consumer electronics. He began his career working at the world-renowned design consultancy Cooper in San Francisco.

A great $6 book

Make no mistake: This is a sermon. It's not a practical guide. It's not a set of concrete steps to improve. It's the author standing at a pulpit and railing at the evils of the day. The evils are real, and unpleasant. Every designer should read it. And, considering it can be read in about an hour, that's not asking much.

However, for an everyday geek, or programmer, who doesn't have machine learning tools or skills to implement the ideas here, this book is full of lots of "No", and very little "Yes". The author suggests a few tools which are "doing it right", but offers little concrete advice for curing the ills described. So, you're left with an hour or two worth of entertainment, and little more.

In short, this is a short little sermon, which was enjoyable. It's a 5 star book at $6, but a 3 star book at $16. Read it, or better still, find it on sale later. It can wait.

I'm glad I got a chance to review this book

I'm glad I got a chance to review this book. The premise is really incredible, I do think there will be a point where a lot of digital products will be seamless and will work without a screen BUT the book itself is not that good at delivering the right answers or at least interesting insights. Instead the author complains about the current paradigm for most of the book. He tries to be clever and visionary but instead he comes off as whiny and boring. I love the who No UI concept, I think it's very powerful, and as a product designer I was expecting to find some useful insight instead it's just a waste of time other than a few interesting parts. If there's anything positive about it it's that it made me want to actually learn big data and machine learning myself to make my own products and hopefully someday write a better version of this book with actual scenarios and real solutions.

Quick, Entertaining Read: Needs More Depth

"No Interface" is an entertaining and compelling polemic that I recommend to readers looking for a refreshingly contrarian take on User Experience. Is it good for purists? No. Is it a sound technical overview? Nope. Will it win awards for investigative journalism? Not hardly. It is however written humorously and sincerely and will engage you on a weekend or cross-Atlantic flight. I enjoy reading sour-puss takes on new media and this book fits the bill, with an exposition of idiotic case-studies and supporting snarky graphics. As a reasoned critique of industry trends, in line with "You are not a Gadget" and "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus", this book laments how great brains dedicate their life work to inane, but lucrative advertising platforms, when companies need to be more original and less derivative: service their customers and users more than their shareholders (not that the two are mutually exclusive). The criticism of apps and lop-sided paid market for them was right-on-the-money, not to mention the safety risks of distracted drivers and disappointment of ersatz socialization.

"No Interface" falls short of substance on SOLUTIONS as opposed to the many FAILURES that it categorizes and details in great, mocking detail. Where are all these great "no interfaces"? The examples cited are anemic except for maybe healthcare. Where is a recognition of the substantial technical barriers to rising above the ubiquitous UI itself? Throw more sensors on devices and latch onto the IoT? Another nitpick - glorifying Snowden as a champion of privacy is not only out-of-scope, but untruthful. His supposed revelations have empowered rogue and totalitarian nations more than anything else he "accomplished". Boo on that. Finally, light pollution correlated with cancer does not mean causation - a stretch.

On a final note, the book succeeds in opening a discussion (or argument) about the need to humanize technology and come up with a better business model in doing so. I'd read a serious (and seriously funny) follow-up if there's one planned.
