Maybe a little "lterary license" but, by and large, true!

Having read some of the earlier reviews I thought that it might be enlightening to provide a little bit of background for "The Tracker" and its author, Tom Brown, Jr.
I have hunted and fished and loved the outdoors all of my life. When I first read "The Tracker" I was immediately fascinated with the thought that there still might be a master tracker and survivalist somewhere in the world and that if even 50% of "The Tracker" was true, I had to find this guy!!! First of all, though, I searched out and read everything I could by Tom Brown and began to realize just how little I knew about the "real" world. I finally contacted the publisher of "The Tracker" and was directed to a P.O. Box number in New Jersey. I wrote to Tom about the possibility of learning from him and was rewarded by being informed that he operated an outdoors school. I began to attend classes there and judged for myself if Tom was the person he claimed. My conclusion is-- that he can do everything he claims (and I have seen him do some stuff that just leaves you shaking your head). Countless newspaper stories in New Jersey and elsewhere documenting his ability to find lost people (some of whom didn't necessarily want to be found) attest to his tracking ability. His favorite phrase seems to be, "Prove me wrong!". He is confident of his ability and genuinely wants you to be able to do the same things he does. Don't let the fact that our lives are pretty much consumed by the day to day struggle to survive blind you to the fact that there is a fantastic world out there and try to remember that you once knew about it when you were young and your mind was open. "The Tracker" is a great read that you can take as fiction OR fact and enjoy equally!! Be careful, though, because it may have the same effect as the little pill in "The Matrix" and you may "wake up". In any case, it will at least remind you of how life used to be when you were young and everything was fascinating!!!

A Wonderful and Enjoyable Resource on Tracking, WIlderness Survival and More

Some reviewers have been critical or skeptical of this book and/or it's author. My latest purchase of this book was as a gift, for a young relative who's going thru training for position as a Game Warden. My own copy was purchased many years ago, after learning of it thru other boys in my sons' Boy Scout troop at the time. There were no reviews by others that biased my view or appreciation of it at that time.

I read the book thru cover-to-cover, and learned many things - about 'how to track', basic wilderness survival considerations and methods ...and about life from 'different perspectives.' Whatever criticisms some reviewers recorded in Amazon many years later, I didn't experience or consider them worth remembering. Some of the 'promotional wording' on the cover really doesn't relate to what I got out of the book. This is just too good - as instruction, as appreciation, and even just basic enjoyment.

One of the most significant 'lessons' was what he described as Stalking Wolf's (Grandfather's) primary (or only?) teaching method. Unlike many "how to" books (like the typical Boy Scout Manual of the time), Grandfather never 'told them' to "do this or do that" in response to some situation. What he did (entirely, it seems, from my memory of reading it long ago) was to ask questions ...which provoked the boys to use their powers of observation and thinking processes to learn for themselves about the situations he placed them in, or pointed them toward.

If someone is interested in learning about basics of tracking and/or wilderness survival, I don't think this is a resource they should overlook ...unless they're already very advanced from other 'hands on' training (maybe Special Forces or Ranger training? I never experienced those myself, so can't compare it).

I found this at the library 20 years ago and read it to our 2 young daughters. We did a chapter a day and found it the greatest adventure book ever. After reading this book, I went on to read all of the books Tom Brown wrote concerning his further adventures and instruction from Grandfather in the natural and spiritual order.

About the Author
Mr Steve Bonsor is a general dental practitioner working in private practice in Aberdeen. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1992 with Honours and won the Hepburn Prize for the best senior student in dental hospital practice. In 1997, he gained a Diploma in Post Graduate Dental Studies from the University of Bristol. Also in that year he was appointed a part-time clinical teacher at Dundee Dental Hospital and School and Honorary Clinical Teacher at the University of Dundee in the Sections of Operative Dentistry, Fixed Prosthodontics, Endodontology and Integrated Oral Care and taught there on a part time basis until 2006. He was admitted as a member to the Institute of Learning and Teaching in 2001 and awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2007. He completed a Master of Science at the University of Bristol graduating in 2008.

He is heavily involved in postgraduate dental education having lectured throughout the UK. He has also extensive experience of tutoring the dental team, in particular dental nurses. He has recently been appointed as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. He is currently actively involved in research having published original research articles in peer reviewed journals with his main research areas being Photo-Activated Disinfection and the clinical performance of dental materials. He is a referee for a number of dental journals. He is a key influence of a number of dental material and equipment manufacturers.

Gavin Pearson trained as a dentist at UCL Dental School. In 1969 he was appointed as a lecturer in Conservative Dentistry at UCL Dental School and subsequently at the London Hospital Medical College Dental Institute. During this time he carried out work on the early composite filling materials. He was appointed Senior Lecturer/Hon Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at UCL in 1979 and in 1987 he became Head of Biomaterials at Eastman Dental Institute and Hon Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. He was appointed Reader in 1990 and was awarded a personal Chair in Biomaterials in 1996. He became head of Biomaterials in relation to Dentistry at QMUL in 1999 and was also Associate Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Biomedical Materials at QMUL until his retirement in 2006. He has collaborated on a number of research projects with dental manufacturers.

His research has concentrated on the clinical problems associated with dental material and has been involved in the research and development of minimally invasive techniques using antibacterial PDT and glass ionomer cements. He has published over 140 peer reviewed papers. He has been associated with the University of Bristol Open Learning for Dentistry [BUOLD] courses since their inception in 1990. He has lectured in both the US and Europe and has been the UK Principle Expert on Glass Ionomer Cements at a number of ISO meetings.

This fine piece of scholarship presents a systematic application of sociological models to a movement whose heart and soul is sectarian. In examining Seventh-Day Adventisms history and development from its inception as a postmillennialist movement in the 1800s to its current status as a faith tradition with a distinctive identity, Vance (psychology/sociology, Georgia Southwestern State Univ.) has crafted a remarkably readable book of religio-sociological research. Vance argues that Adventisms move from sectarianism to institutionalization has succeeded through the creation of physical structures that reinforce its unique identity while meeting temporal needs that allow for a more accommodating response to the world. This thesis is borne out by Vances examination of family structure, theology, and the development of the movement. One area of unique identification for Adventists is that of gender roles, and it is here, she finds, that Adventism has the greatest opportunity to alter the boundaries of church hierarchy not only for itself but for the Christian community as a whole. Sociologist asks why Adventists won't ordain women

Social science Professor Laura Vance tells the amazing story how Seventh-day Adventism, which was founded by Ellen Harmon White, the most prolific woman writer and preacher of the nineteenth-century, moved in 100 years from an egalitarian social ethic to the almost total exclusion of women from its administration. Since White's death, Adventism has moved toward the mainstream of American religion, adopting the social conservatism as well as the theological positions of evangelicalism, and systematically excluding women from leadership positions. In contrast to the early Adventist pioneers, who favored various reform movements such as anti-slavery and women's health issues, American church bureaucrats have narrowed their social gaze and moved to the right in their implicit political stance. This trend, which actively favored public evangelism over social reform and suppressed women's participation in leadership, has since the late 1970's been challenged by new voices calling for the ordination of women to the gospel ministry and other leadership positions in the SDA church. In addition, the international growth of the membership of the SDA church, adding millions of members in countries where patriarchialism and traditional power structures favor men has helped keep women out of power. The answer, says Vance, is not for Adventist leaders to imagine they are fighting a battle against feminism or liberalism but to embrace once again the diversity and openness of its early history, an Edenic time when women and men sang and preached side-by-side, when the male leaders were not afraid of the visionary power of women but practiced a co-operative type of gender equality.
Vance's book comes as the fourth in a series of comprehensive non-denominational interpretations of Adventism which began in the 1980's with Ron Numbers and Jonathan Butler, "The Disappointed: Millerism and Millenarianism in the Nineteenth-Century" (Indiana University Press, 1989, Malcom Bull and Keith Lockhart's "Seeking a Sanctuary: Seventh-day Adventism and the American Dream" (Harper and Row, 1989) and Michael Pearson, Millenial Dreams and Moral Dilemmas: Seventh-day Adventists and Contemporary Ethics" (Cambridge Unversity Press, 1990). Vance's book, written largely from the perspective of gender issues, gathers from a hundred years of the "Adventist Review" and from more recent publications such as "Spectrum".
The style of Professor Vance's book, written after extensive field research in actual Adventist congregations and at Walla Walla College, will appeal to both social scientists studying the religious phenomenon of Adventism, and to SDA members, clergy and teachers who wish to view themselves in the words of an intelligent and sympathetic outsider. Teachers of American religious movements will find this book the best general introduction to Adventism for students who are also interested in women's issues, social science theory and religion. Highly recommended.

Blackbird - a play by David Harrower

I bought the play Blackbird, because I wasn't going to get the chance to see it on Broadway. I read the play, and I didn't want it to end. It's not your ordinary night out at the theatre. It presents you a world that is unsettling, disturbing, and intriguing! The script was haunting and beautiful. It's been a few weeks since I've read it, and it's still stuck with me. Bravo David Harrower!

SOMETIMES THE PAST DOESN'T GO AWAY

David Harrower. Blackbird. Faber and Faber. 87+vi pp. 2006. $13 (pb)

English playwright Harrower wrote Blackbird in 2005 for an Edinburgh premiere. It opened in London in 2006 and in New York in 2007 and won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2007. It's essentially a two-character play, an older man and a younger woman in hot argument. (A voice is heard off stage at one point and for two pages a young girl is on stage with the two of them.) The woman is Una. She's twenty-seven. The man is Ray, although he goes by the name Peter now. He's fifty-five.

Fifteen years ago they were lovers. Ray was caught. He was sent to jail. He served his sentence and came out. He has worked hard since then to put his life back in order. He has a woman. She has a daughter. The woman knows about Ray's past but probably not the finer details. She wasn't happy about it but Ray -excuse me, Peter-- is a new man now.

Una isn't a new person. She's never been able to get beyond that time when Ray and she were illicit lovers. She's been frozen in that place for fifteen years -by her parents, who blame her for it, by her neighbors who point at her, by her own crippling and complex feelings about the past and about Ray.

Then one day, she sees Ray's picture in a magazine, a trade journal. There he is in the photo, smiling at the camera, but his name isn't Ray, it's Peter, Peter Trevelyan, how white bread can you get? She confronts him at his work place. He takes her into the locker room so they can talk alone.

They talk non-stop, just the two of them except for a page or two when Ray's new step-daughter comes into the room, for eighty-seven pages, in a glorious language that is at once wholly naturalistic and intensely, elegiacally poetic. They express harrowing sentiments (no pun intended) and exhume old hurts. The play ends without a clear victory or loss for either of them. It's just been a complicated dance --two people with an exceptionally painful joint history to explore but no resolution to it.

chilling and captivating

This play is really chilling. The playwright boldly explores the forbidden relationship between a pre-teen and an older lover, and the emotional roller coaster that occurs. Very moving, disturbing and heartfelt.

Learn from a master

This book gives anyone the opportunity to learn how to invest from a master. Mr. Kirkpatick shares knowledge that he has accumulated during his long, successful career in the market. Not only does he share what he does, he shares why he does it. The reader can quickly and easily follow Mr. Kirkpatrick's strategies. Unlike many authors, his book isn't written to sell his software or his services; there is no "secret" witheld from the reader. For the reader who wants to spend a bit more time and be more involved with the trading process, Mr. Kirkpatrick's book provides a wealth of ideas and provides a process for further exploration on the part of the reader. Reading this book is an opportunity to get inside one of the best minds in the industry.

Spend your $30 elsewhere ...

Really now, this is a tiny book with only 140 pages (not 160) and the 1st 30 or so are spent introducing what he is gonna talk about in the rest of the book. Main thing I got out of this was just to rely more on the ADX indicator (which I already use anyway). Your better off spending your money on Robert Miner's (High Probability Trading Strategies) or Corey Rosenbloom's (The Complete Trading Course) book for near the same cost.

Another Solid Effort by Kirkpatrick

This is the 3rd book by Kirkpatrick that I've purchased. If you are familiar with Kirkpatrick's writing/teaching style, then the evidence-based approach will be familiar. If you haven't experienced Kirkpatrick's scholarship, but instead have experience with other technical analysis writers, understand that the evidence-based approach is far and above most other technical analysis authors (there are only a handful that use an evidence-based approach). Most trading books that deal with technical analysis are not evidence based - basically meaning the authors recommend strategies that may or may not actually work. We cannot know for sure, because their methods haven't been tested.

Kirkpatrick is different. This book reads more like a thesis book for a PhD or similar to an article submitted to a peer reviewed journal. It lays out the methodology, presents how the methodology was developed, and along the way cites to other authorities.

Although another reviewer compares this book to other trend trading books, once you grasp what it means to be evidence-based you quickly realize that it's an insult to compare this book to others on the topic. Kirkpatrick has an IVY League education, has multiple articles published in peer-reviewed journals, has multiple books published (including one that serves as the textbook for the CMT curriculum), holds the CMT designation, and teaches at Brandeis University. He also has four decades of experience in the markets, for decades now writes a monthly newsletter, and has won multiple achievement awards in technical analysis.

As to this book, it presents a methodology for investing over the intermediate term. It's not for day-traders; though I think that day traders can learn things about the indicators discussed. Nor is this a book teaching buy-and-hold. It's also not going to discuss the basics of investing. Kirkpatrick assumes you know somewhat about the markets (or at least investing), so he's not going to explain how order flow works etc.

I think he also assumes that some of the readers out there may have been exposed to non-evidence based books, and portions of the text indirectly debunks some of the ideas that these other books spread. For example, during his presentation of how he tested his methodology, he discusses common ways certain indicators are used and shows why that thinking is flawed. This is also why you cannot merely go off the table of contents and decide whether or not there's value. Yes, he discusses moving averages, but not in a way I've ever read in any of the mainstream technical analysis books. Ditto for his other indicators.

Although another reviewer complained about the length of the book, and that the first part of the book was dedicated to explaining how the methodology was tested, I believe it's quality over quantity. Although it might at first appear that the content related to testing is just filler, in my mind it serves multiple purposes. Like in an academic work, showing how the testing was done allows others to double check the work to ensure that no errors were made. For advanced traders it presents a framework for how a proper test should be conducted. For the beginner, as mentioned earlier, it dispels some of the technical analysis myths. Overall, I think it should give you more confidence in the methodology when compared to a book that skips the testing part and just instructs you to take the authors word for it.

One of the things I would have liked to read more about was with the relative strength selection aspect of his methodology. He does explain what it is, and notes that it can be calculated in a spreadsheet, but the text doesn't really walk through how to actually do the calculations in a spreadsheet. This is what holds me back from giving this text the full 5 stars.

I'll conclude on a positive note: so many of the investment book I read these days are really nothing more than advertisements for the authors website, other books, newsletter, etc. Or, a book will introduce a topic, but the author will refer the reader to a prior work for the full details. Kirkpatrick's book skips all of this. To be sure, there are references to other books, but these are in the context of citations. Kirkpatrick does refer the reader to other books for learning money management, but these are not to his own books. And, that particular subject is beyond the scope of the book. Although Kirkpatrick does have a newsletter, he does not advertise it within the content of the book. What you get is his methodology and how it was tested.

DR. VIJAY SRINIVAS AGNEESWARAN (Bangalore, India) is currently Director Technology/Principal Architect as head of Big Data R&D at Impetus. His R&D focuses on Big Data governance, batch and real-time analytics, and paradigms for implementing machine learning algorithms for Big Data. A professional member of ACM and the IEEE for more than 8 years, he was recently elevated to IEEE Senior Member. Large price for little return

This book seems to be half-done. There are several well-written overviews, but the in-depth portion(s) of the book are not yet complete. It seems as though this was a graduate paper that was hastily turned into a technical overview. I would wait for the author to finish the book before paying such a hefty sum.

This book is a good academic overview of some of the newer big data technologies. It is not going to enough to teach you how to use those technologies. But it will give you a good idea how they can be used. I would have liked more detail.

I very much enjoyed this book and have been referring to it both ...

I wanted to do a longer review of this book for my blog(opengardensblog) - but here is a short comment. I very much enjoyed this book and have been referring to it both in my professional capacity and also in my teaching (at Oxford and UPM). As the title says - it is 'beyond hadoop' .. and in that sense, expects a certain familiarity with the subject in the first place. It covers this task of 'beyond hadoop' very well for practitioners. I especially found the breadth very useful ex coverage of Spark, Storm, BDAS etc. My own interest lies in Real time and IoT (which is also in the beyond hadoop realm) and it was well covered (Ch 4 Realizing Machine Learning Algorithms in Real time). My students have also found the early chapters useful(Chapter 2 - Understanding the BDAS stack) and Ch 3 - Realizing Machine learning algorithms in Spark. So, overall - I would say .. If you know a bit of Hadoop and if you want to save yourselves a lot of time to understand the roadmap beyond - this is a great book from a practitioners perspective
