another MASTERPIECE from Nerburn

This time Nerburn starts having vivid dreams. They're relentless, confounding, and ominous. Eventually, they propel him into his third encounter with the American Indian world of Dan the Elder; Grover the grouch; Jumbo the gentle giant; a slobbery orphan dog; a wistful, young girl with an old soul; a woodland Anishinaabe man known by Dan as one of "the old ones" who raises buffalo; and a gruesome Indian insane asylum in South Dakota.
Of the three books Nerburn has written on his experiences with the Indian people of "Dan the Elder's" world, "The Girl Who Sang to the Buffalo." is the most fleshed-out, mysterious, awe-inspiring, sad, humorous, suspenseful, and courageous. Nerburn walks to the edge of a deep precipice of human understanding and shows us the terror and magnitude of things Western Europeans may never fully understand. In the framework of indigenous spirituality, cosmology, and culture all things are connected. In the hands of the literary master craftsman Kent Nerburn, the disparate landscapes, personalities and situations in his book are also connected and profoundly meaningful.
Nerburn has an understanding of the Native culture that transcends the best efforts of theologians, anthropologists, sociologists, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, American government, and zealot do-gooders. He puts himself in situations he knows will pummel his ego but lead him to a place of knowledge and understanding. To be available for these teachings, he is lead across axel-busting-back-country roads, greasy roadhouses, a senior citizens home, deep forests, encounters with a menacing buffalo bull, and a historically suppressed Indian insane asylum. Most often, he is reluctant to challenge his own comforts but always committed to his friendship with Dan the Elder, and subsequently, the search for Dan's long-lost sister, Yellow Bird.
The Hiawatha Asylum for Insane Indians, Canton, SD (1901 - 1934) was an institution in a small town in southeastern South Dakota that was the brainchild of Indian agent and Republican Senator R.F. Pettigrew and Canton's former town mayor, Oscar Gifford. The former mayor wanted to promote jobs and bring esteem to an otherwise unknown entity on the edge of the western prairie. It was, ostensibly, erected to serve the truly desperate Native individual who suffered from "mental illness" and needed institutionalization. In fact, Gifford was a land developer who made out pretty well on the deal and became the first Administrator of the asylum without any prior medical experience, knowledge of hospitals, psychiatry, or Native Americans.
The Indians? You guessed it - they got screwed again: chained to radiator pipes; abandoned in locked cells to lie in their own filth for weeks; forced labor; beaten and tortured; and most of them never heard from again. One hundred and twenty one "inmates" were buried in graves that now lie between the fourth and fifth fairways of the local golf course. The asylum was the last place Dan's sister was suspected of being seen or heard of alive.
Enter Nerburn. Armed with new information about Dan's sister that is related to his unusual dreams, Nerburn travels back and forth between Minnesota, South Dakota, and remote forests of Northern Minnesota more than once finding, again and again, one more clue or possibility in the search for Yellow Bird. In between the many miles of his travels, he witnesses events and situations that tear at the tenuous membrane of our understanding of reality. For "the old ones", it is business as usual. For the readers of this of this book, it is phantasmagoric.
There are "homilies" in all of Nerburn's "Dan the Elder" books that should be required reading for every history, social studies, and religious studies program in our public schools. The words of Grover in chapters 16, "Priests and Pelicans":
Most white people who come out to the rez, they're easy to figure. They start poking around, asking allsorts of things, want to get close real fast.
`Take me to ceremony. Can I do a sweat? Can you give me an Indian name? How do I earn an eagle feather?' They bring a box of used clothes and think that gives them the right to stick their nose in everywhere. Or else they come out here all Native with ponytails and Great Spirit talk, claiming they were an Indian in a past life or that they had a Cherokee grandmother. . .
You respected him. You respected the job he wanted you to do.
You respected the distance between our people and yours.
You had patience and you kept your mouth shut. . . .

and Dan's words in chapter 24, "Two Worlds Inside You":
It hurts my heart when I feel myself becoming weak to the
old ways. It dishonors the ancestors. But I get so tired. All us
Indian people get tired. Your people are like a big bully come into
our house knocking us down, over and over. Every time we stand
up you knock us down again. You kill our language, you kill our
traditional ways. You make fun of us in your movies and disrespect
us with your sports teams. You put us in jail for practicing
our ceremonies. You keep beating us down until we can't remember
who we were and we don't know who we are and all we have is what
you tell us we're supposed to be.

are examples of the words of the Native people that need to be heard by everyone. What Nerburn relates to us in Chapter 17 demonstrates the need for absolute trust and honesty with the Native people and we need to hear it.
Kent Nerburn is committed to mutual understanding between the dominant society of the Christian Western European and the indigenous people of this continent. He, of course, is not alone in that effort. However, he is one of the few who brings humanity and perspective to an acrimonious relationship between two opposing cultures. He knows the difference between the humanity of his Indian characters and the "idea" of what an Indian should be.
Below the surface of his literary skill rides the underlying question posed by Harvard researcher and ethno botanist, Dr. Wade Davis, "What does it mean to be human and alive?" Nerburn brings humanity to the indigenous milieu and gives flesh and bones to people who were perceived as "non-human" by a society that felt it knew what was best for the "savages."
Abandon all preconceptions ye who enter this realm of the indigenous world of the seen and the unseen. You may not believe what you see and hear but for the Indian people it's all connected.

Extraordinary

Not since Black Elk Speaks: Being the Life Story of a Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux by John G. Neihardt have I read a book that touched my heard in this way. Many years ago, why my children were young, I brought home a copy of Black Elk Speaks that I had found in a second hand books store and it wouldn't let me leave without it. Since that days, so long ago we have probably purchased six other copies, one for each of my children, and two or more for lending.. one to stay home. I have lost count. This will join the battered copy of that book on my shelf, the one where the books live that will always stay with me. This book, The Girl Who Sang to the Buffalo: A Child, an Elder, and the Light from an Ancient Sky by Kent Nerburn is a life changer, a spirit toucher, a heartbreaker. This is a story, and it is a truth.

Why do these books touch me is so strong a way? I don't know, as in this lifetime, I have not walked in the shoes of any but a white woman, but somewhere in the past, in a lifetime long ago, I think I knew. For this reason, I think I can also hear the ring of truth in words spoken, or written. I found this book waiting patiently for me on a list of Vine books, and I knew it had to be mine.

You will read the story of Yellow Bird, her family and her her ancestors, and her gifts. This is a story of how gifts are passed, how elders remember and why. This is a story of the world the way it was meant to be, not what we have twisted it into.

The power of an avalanche!

The best way I can describe this book is to liken it to an avalanche that begins with a tiny ball of snow dislodged on the upper slopes and eventually turns into an awesome force. Nerburn begins by describing in simple and somewhat spare language a recurrent dream that sends him out to revisit an earlier quest that he fears he didn't adequately complete. It ends with a mystical experience of profound power and beauty, played out under a truly awesome display of Northern Lights and amidst a herd of buffalo. Along the way, Nerburn provides vivid characterizations, significant humor, and deep spirituality. He also gives an almost unendurably painful view of the viciousness of the methodical destruction of Indian culture perpetrated by the boarding school system and other interventions of white society's style of "pacification by intimidation and domination".

Let me emphasize that the awareness of the incredible predations of white culture upon the indigenous inhabitants of the Western Hemisphere is not new to me. From a purely personal viewpoint, I have two Navajo sons-in-law and five grandchildren who are members of the Navajo tribe. Before that, I grew up in New Mexico, and my father, as an artist, was deeply in touch not only with the Pueblo culture in the Rio Grande River valley, but also was deeply in tune with the natural world in the "Land of Enchantment". I have read extensively, including the works of Victor VillaseƱor, whose book "Beyond Rain of Gold" was actually the first book I reviewed for Amazon Vine. However, I am, like Nerburn, unavoidably "white" (or Anglo, as we preferred to say in the Southwest), which makes it essentially impossible to be other than an interloper to some extent.

I have to add one other vital point in my review of this book. Just a couple of weeks ago, at the author's request, I reviewed the book "Quantum Jumps" by Cynthia Sue Larson. In it she presented a completely coherent, scientifically focused, discussion of many of the phenomena of consciousness that are in fact part of the experiences Nerburn discusses here. These include dream communication, connection between minds widely separated both in time and space, and so on. I have often previously noted a "cluster effect" with respect to ideas that come to my attention. I can't help but be aware of the incredible synchronicity in this case between the concepts Larson shares and the experiences and events Nerburn describes.

Although I haven't read Nerburn's previous titles in the series that culminates with this narrative, I have no doubt they would be very rewarding. However, I get the sense that this book may well be the author's masterwork. It is important at every level, but for me especially it is more than anything else a clarion call to revisit the arrogance of our culture of dominance and technology, and to open our hearts to ways of being respectful towards and in communication with deeper consciousness, broader wisdom, and more profound love.

Good introduction to this troubled and strategic land

What is historically known as the "Land of Canaan" has been, and still is, one of the main crossroads of human History, Religion, and Philosophy. Asimov tells us the complex yet fascinating story, from the first known human traces, found in Jerico circa 7,800 BC, until the total control of the Roman Empire, in 135 AD. We read the stories of the Cananeans, Phillistines, Arameans, Hebrews, Jews, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, etc., and the successive dominations of Egyptians, Hicsians, Assyrians, Caldeans, Persians, Greeks and Romans. It is written with the trademarks of Asimov's history: fast pace, sense of humor, precision, anlysis and criticism.
Although later discoveries, very important in the last decades, may have modified or slightly altered some of Asimov's hypotheses or data, I think it is a wonderful introduction to more serious and specializaed study of this crucial region of the world. For non-specialists, particularly, it is a good book, since the writing is easy and the tone is non-academic. Recommended.

As kids spend ever more time in the virtual world, the debate over whether video games foster harmful or helpful real-world habits rages. Marc Prensky, an educational software developer, is pro-game. In "Don’t Bother Me Mom—I’m Learning!", Prensky maintains that kids "are almost certainly learning more positive, useful things for their future from their video and computer games than they learn in school!"

Prensky wants to ease parents’ fears by describing how kids see gaming and what they learn. "[P]retty much all the information that parents and teachers have to work with is a lot of speculation, conjecture, and overblown rhetoric about the putative negative aspects of these games," he writes. Unfortunately, his counterstrategy is to throw together a similarly speculative mix in defense.

Prensky presents an opinionated argument filled with anecdotes, a few studies, and quotes pulled from published news stories. There is no evidence too specious: he cites a recent study that found younger, newer radiologists were more accurate in reading mammograms than older, more experienced doctors and asks, "Could the higher visual acuity gained from playing video games be at work here?" How can the reader know, when Prensky didn’t talk to the researchers to find out if the study was trying to answer this question?

He also takes the easy road in response to studies that find a link between aggressive behavior and violent video games: "Absolutely no one can say, when all the complex factors in a single child’s life are taken into account, whether any individual child will be negatively influenced overall." Of course not. The question, however, is whether video games are a risk factor for aggression and, if so, to what extent.

Nor will Prensky concede that there could be anything wrong with new technology. Writing about cell phones, he says that "the first ‘educational’ use students implemented for their cell phones was retrieving information on demand during exams. Educators, of course, refer to this as ‘cheating.’ They might better serve their students by redefining open-book testing as openphone testing." It is not hard to believe that children are learning problem-solving skills and hand-eye coordination from video games, as Prensky and others have written. Nor are all video games about killing things. But parents who have concerns about potential negative effects will be hard-pressed to fi nd thoughtful, well-researched answers here. —

Instead, he contends that games can teach a multitude of skills, including problem solving, language and cognitive skills, strategic thinking, multitasking, and parallel processing. He cites research showing the benefits of games in teaching skills children will need in a twenty-first-century economy, pointing to the military use of games to teach strategy, laproscopic surgeons who play games as a "warm-up" before surgery, and entrepreneurs who played games growing up. Better yet, Prensky details positive attributes of popular games, including the controversial Grand Theft Auto, and addresses parent concerns about children becoming addicted, socially isolated, or developing aggression because of games. He offers recommendations for particularly beneficial games as well as Web sites to advance parent learning, and provides sound advice on bridging the gap between what he calls the young digital natives and the older digital immigrants. Good Points, But Lacks the Necessary Research

In his book, _Don't Bother Me, Mom--I'm Learning_, Marc Prensky delivers a convincing argument in favor of the success video and computer games have in preparing children for success in the 21st century. Rather than standing agape in horror at the number of hours children are spending with these games, Prensky suggests parents should rather use the games as opportunities to open and engage in conversations on issues such as ethics and morality with their children. The games themselves, Prensky argues, are neither good nor bad; it is the learning taking place during the course of the game and how parents and other adults address this learning that should rather be open to scrutiny.

In his book, Prensky draws a distinctive line between the Digital Native, those born after the massive integration of technology into American culture, and the Digital Immigrant, those born before this technological revolution. The differences, he says, could not be more widespread, as in most cases, as effectively summarized in the opening chapter by a researcher who said, "In all our interviews with parents, we never found a parent who knew what their kid was doing." Another sharp division occurs in the area of computer or video gaming, where children spend hundreds of hours engaged in a single game while the parent stands back, sure that their child is wasting their time or even more frightening, preparing for a life as a mass murderer.

As it turns out, the lessons that the children are learning are closer to management of personnel and resources, cooperation, adaptivity, economics, ethics, and even living a healthy lifestyle. Many corporations, not the least of which, the Department of Defense, have already discovered the usefulness of gaming in training and simulation exercises. The U.S. Army alone has spent over $10 million in the development of a game to introduce the prospective recruit to the Army way of life and is in the process of spending an additional $50 million in other game-based training scenarios. It's time, he points out, for parents and teachers to get on board.

This is an easy to read book, directed at parents and teachers who are woefully ignorant of what's going on in the minds of their children. Prensky identifies many aspects of education and social development and draws parallels between these essential skills and lessons learned in the normal course of a video or computer game. He further expands the scope by offering suggestions on how these same parents and teachers can become better acquainted with the advantages that gaming has to offer as well as ways to avoid the pitfalls along the way.

The book, for all its good points seems to lack in hard research, relying instead in what Prensky believes are points of common knowledge. Take for example the case of Tyler, a ten year old gamer, who because he was faced with having to fire a player from his team now has a firm grasp on the concepts of economics supply chain and division of labor and at times making assertions that are completely without foundation such as, "The true secret of why kids spend so much time on their games is that they're learning things they need for their twenty-first century lives."

On the whole, Marc Prensky delivers a most readable discussion on the values of video and computer gaming in the social development of a child. Clearly we are in an age of division, not of the "haves" and "have nots", but of the "know" and "know nots", and any effort at bridging that gap towards understanding is not only welcome, but essential. Gaming does have its place in culture and in education, but can never replace the value of good parenting or dedicated teaching.

Advice for Digital Immigrants

This is a book I feel all parents should read. Though I'm what Prensky would call a "digital immigrant," my accent isn't too thick. I may be nearing 40, but I got involved with computers as they came around and have never been afraid of technology. Gaming, Internet, etc.--I love it all. And, despite the fact my gaming time has reduced as I've gotten older, I've never really understood the hysteria over computer games.

For parents, this book is a great primer about video & computer games. It makes a case for why these games benefit children but, more importantly, it explains a lot of the gaming & computer jargon and gives examples of a lot of the popular software. If a parent really wants to make an effort to understand what interests their child about computers, this book is a great place to start. It also gives parents encouraging advice on how to connect with their children through these games.

I used to be quite a gamer myself (I leaned towards the strategy games like Civilization and Railroad Tycoon). After reading this book, I went out and bought Civilization IV (and The Sims for my wife) and rediscovered what I loved so much about them. Hopefully, when my children get to the age when they want to play computer games, I'll be able to participate with them on some level.

On the other hand, as a veteran teacher, I'm not convinced by some of his conclusions about the educational value of these games. I agree that these games are certainly not detrimental, any more than other "traditional" child pasttimes. (Any activity--reading, sports, etc.-- can be detrimental if done exclusively and to excess. As parents, it is our job to monitor all our child's activities and press them for moderation when we see them slipping into excess.) I agree that they can develop skills that are useful for children. I agree that technology & modern culture are rewiring our children's brains to be different and we must accept and deal with that (particularly teachers).

Still, I have yet to see a game that truly imparts curriculum in an effective manner. Civilization is a great game & offers great talking points to a history teacher but it cannot teach history effectively. Perhaps there will be truly dynamic games in the future that will teach curriculum well but, for all my support of technology, I see it as a tool, not as a guide. Like all tools, it can be used well or poorly but, as always, it goes back to the human hand that controls it.

But, despite these quibbles, I must give credit where credit is due: Prensky has written a very good book here. He opens our eyes to the importance of understanding these games. They are not going away and, with a little effort, both parents and educators can get a little more insight into young people today. Some of that effort should be put into reading this book.

Nails It--Secretary of Education Needs to Read This Book

I was introduced to the author's work on Digital Natives by a very smart and unusually open-minded colleague at the National Geospatial Agency, and I am hooked as well as relieved.

The greatest complement I can give this book is that my 15-year old, a master of Warlock, saw this book come in the door and immediately took it away from me and read it overnight. He gives it high marks.

This is also the book that inspired me to take Serious Games and Games for Change *very* seriously. Most gamers do not understand the need to work toward an EarthGame that includes actual budgets and actual science, but Medard Gabel of BigPictureSmallWorld gets it, and that's enough for me.

The list of games provided at the end by the author, to create a serious game home learning environment, is priceless. Some may be overtaken by events but the bottom line is that digital learning is vastly superior to rote learning in schools.

I am a participant in three Hacker communities--Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE) based in New York, Hac-Tic based in Amsterdam, and Hackers/THINK based in California. I have met thousands of hackers over the years, and I am certain that the best and the brightest are not those with straight A's in the current school system, but those that tune out the high school regime by their junior year, and start learning what they want to learn on their own. My oldest son just won first prize in the Fairfax County digital music content, representing his school, but he will not graduate because he refuses to spend time on Algebra 2. He has very high SAT scores, will pass the GED with an almost perfect score, and will take digital music and digital art courses at three colleges in the DC area as a non-degree candidate. I go on at length here because this is both very personal for me, and also a national disaster--our entire curriculum is so out of date, and taught by so many drones, the few master teachers not withstanding, that I completely understand why our national ranking in math and science is out the window, why we have fallen to 7th on the national innovation scale, behind three Nordic countries and three Asian countries.

I admire this author. In a most positive manner, he is telling us the Secretary of Education is quite naked, and what we can do about it. This is a foundation book for any parent of "digital natives."
