Unequivocally the best shifter novel I have ever read

This is hands down the best shifter novel I have ever read, bar none.
I was a little nervous typing that, when I think back on the amazing stories I've read. But there's no way I can't say it.
TJ Klune so expertly breaks your heart, makes you feel so much for his characters. I've been on a bit of a shifter binge lately, when I saw this was coming out only a few days ago. Honestly, I think I am going to have to take a break from shifters, because there is NO WAY I will find anything as satisfying. The world building, the characters (not just a handful, but complex, diverse characters, a whole pack of them), the writing, the emotion. Ox and Joe have me completely in love. I love the fact that you can see the characters learning and growing, and building their family. I thought I loved TJ Klune after BOATK, but wow. I just KNOW I will be fangirling hardout for the next few months. I don't have a book blog, but you can bet your bum I'll be recommending and sharing this with anyone who will listen.

An epic, moving, and suspenseful tale.

This is one of the better "werewolf" books I've read in a while. It's an epic tale spanning over a decade, engaging the readers with well-developed and compelling characters and thoughtful and heart-tugging prose.

The book, while romantic, is not a typical romance. It spans a length of time surpassing a decade as the two main characters, one of which is a child when they met, develop and reconcile their feelings for each other and their duties to their pack. Ox is human, but not "just" human. Being drawn into their pack, he can feel the ties to each member as they start to develop. As time progresses, his role in the pack changes, and though he was taught by his absentee father that he's nothing special, he gradually discovers he's much more than he had thought and is everything his new family/pack believes him to be.

The shifter world is examined in a new light. Gone are the Omegas who are submissive and empathetic. Here, they are the rogue wolves who have given into their basest instincts. Here, they are the monsters. Witches are men or women who have magical abilities, and packs sometimes include one. Like the wolves, witches can lose touch with their humanity as magic can bring you to dark places. Ties in a pack are felt amongst its members as near-physical strings linking them all together, and Ox can feel these developing, sometimes being surprised when new people who are close to the pack are recognized to suddenly belong to the pack.

There's humor, heartache, love, danger, suspense, and thoughtful prose. The characters live and breath, and the words pull at your heart at times. It's a long book, and it moves at a steady pace, always engaging the reader and pulling them into this fantastical world. If you're a fan of shifter stories, and want something that's more than just a run-of-the-mill shifter romance, get this book. For that matter, if you have any interest in fantasy at all, get this book. It's one of my favorites.

GIVE A TRY EVEN IF U DO NOT LIKE SHIFTER TALES- U MIGHT CHANGE YOUR MIND ON THIS ONE

Admittedly , I am a Klune addicted reader. His writing continues to develop with surprising results. There still exists amusing humor in his work but now
tackling different genres with relish. Frankly, I am not a fan of shifting novels or wolf packs. I usually shy away. However, being Klune I was curious.
Believe me I was not disappointed with the choice.

Basically, the story is about an outcast taken in a by a wolf pack. Really, though, it's more than this. Despite the fantasy it has elements that touch the human condition of belonging, living with one's demons, bonding and above all love. I am amazed how Klune can take a story and connect emotionally with one's humanity.

Yeah, I certainly like this one. Also, I noticed Klune did keep his word about the sequel to Withered +Sere coming in August. Kudos to you TJ .

Simmel on Culture

This review might sound a bit strange to many readers as it comes from an unlikely field, namely the study of management.

This book has been an eye-opener for me. Simmel's insightful thought, expressed in beautifully poetic language, has contributed directly to the development of organisational life-cycle theories, and especially that of I. Adizes. His way of looking at cultural development in terms of content versus form, of structure versus flexibility, of life energy versus constraints, as well as his categorisation of individual characters have proved very fertile when transplanted in the field of management. It is a pity that this debt has not been acknowledged more openly.

About the Author

Title is WRONG: some guns in here, the author fired & declared "unsatisfactory" so that you don't have to waste your time!

OK. here it is, an honest review, not some shill for the publisher. Tim Mullin is a respected firearms authority, and I own some of his earlier works [_Testing the War Weapons_, _100 Combat Pistols_, etc.] This appears to be a compendium of those earlier works, with the publisher focusing on glitz over content: the unfortunate editorial decision to fit every firearm on a single page, with a brief paragraph or two beneath each illustration, means that there isn't enough space to illustrate what makes some of the firearms unique [& therefore worthy of inclusion] nor text to explain in detail what makes the firearm significant. There are some minor flaws [spelling errors "Rast und Gasser" is rendered as "Rast und Gasse," for example] and other oddities, like the icon legend listing submachine guns as "small machine guns" and automatic rifles/SAWs as "large machine guns" while GPMGs [larger & heavier than the "large machine guns" of the icon legend] are rendered as "medium machine guns." So I suspect that Tim didn't have as much input into this book as he might have preferred & instead it was cobbled together from his previous works by some underpaid intern at the publisher's, with little to no interest in, or familiarity with, firearms.

If you can't track down any copies of Tim Mullin's earlier [& now OOP] works, then this is a somewhat interesting light overview of his range of output, but is absolutely not up to his usual standard of authorship. Personally, I'm so turned off by the preview that I'm not going to buy it [unless/until it gets remaindered, & then it will depend on whether or not I've got someone to give it to who would appreciate the information but doesn't already have a deeper knowledge of firearms than the book offers.] Thank goodness Amazon has the "look inside" feature! I've been a customer now for almost 20 years, and every day I'm more pleased with them. :-)

It has just occurred to me that the title and format are a giveaway that this was originally intended to be produced as one of those "Day by Day" desk calendars where you tear off a page at a time from a thick pad, and each day has a bit of related content. That would explain a lot, except for why this was released as a [disappointing] book. Maybe because they forgot 2016 is a leap year w/ 366 days? Who knows...

Hands-On Experience Makes Book A Winner

This is as thorough a review of classic and contemporary firearms imaginable for the size and scope of the book. The author is extremely knowledgeable, and what really stands out is the fact he's actually fired every weapon in the book--he's not merely writing proxy reviews based on what others have read and accomplished. There's a little geopolitical history thrown in as well, as the book is organized alphabetically by country. A must-have for any serious firearm collector.

For any firearm enthusiast, this is a must have book for new information or reference. Short concise information and very good color photographs. The only problem is that I am a collector and this book is making me find more firearms to add to my want list. Be careful what you wish for, it gets expensive.

It's not a reference, it's a thick magazine

Here is what you will find in this book: basic, vague, feel-good advice, magazine-like single-sentence tips & tricks.

Here is what you will not find in this book:
* how to determine your skin type or
* what haircuts look good on you
* how to shave or choose razors/trimmers
* specific product recommendations, not even what chemicals to look for in the products or what to avoid
* any arguments, proof or scientific research why you need to moisturize or apply sunscreen
* no photos of protected/unprotected skin over a span of several years or any other examples, only stock photos of male models

His advice on how to determine your skin type: go to a dermatologist.
His advice for choosing a haircut: go to a stylist.
His advice what to do if you are bald or are getting bald: go to a stylist and ask what's best.

There are no examples of haircuts on different shapes of heads, there are no photos that compare what haircuts look good and bad on balding men. His advice for grooming your hair is to use shampoo, conditioner and go to a barber every three weeks. He covers shaving by advising you to shave with the grain, always use a sharp razor and use beard oils, go to a barber and... that's it.

What's worse, the book is repetitive. He addresses specific grooming needs for several types of lifestyles... except the advice you'll read is the same. I read about moisturizing and "eye cream with an SPF of no less than 50" eight times.

This book looks like a magazine, not a book.

This book was given me as a gift for Christmas. I really wanted to like this book so as to not hurt the feelings of the person who gave it to me. There's "reference" in the title, but the book is practically useless. I'd ask for a refund if I could.

Spending money on an advice book about spending money to get advice.

I was expecting more useful advice for grooming. This book isn't very valuable as a tool for skincare or grooming. There was no instruction about how different ingredients work for or against your skincare, or any specific information about the art of shaving. Most of the suggestions involve paying someone else to decide all these things for you. I was hoping this "guide" would be helpful for the regular man trying to up their grooming game, but often it only teaches you how to spend money for the best advice. Disappointing.

What’s cool about this book is that it makes you think about how the way you take care of yourself is a reflection of the way you care for the people in your life or the various roles you have. It makes you more conscious of how you take care of yourself as a whole, from how you adjust to jet lag to proper grooming being another investment you make in yourself. The other cool thing is that there are life hacks in each chapter that cover everything from a DIY-version of polishing your shoes to keeping unruly eyebrows in place. I think this is an excellent book for any guy looking for improvement not only in grooming but in becoming a more positive and confident person to both himself and to others. I highly recommend.

From its inception the New English Bible was intended to be revised. This revision, which has taken into account praise and criticism of the New English Bible and advances in biblical scholarship, is the fruit of 15 years' labor. The style has remained dignified but not stuffy, vigorous but not coarse. Many Briticisms and awkward phrases have been reworked ("loose livers" in I Cor. 5:9 is now "those who are sexually immoral"), though some remain ("a rod in pickle" in Prov. 19:29). The removal of "thee" and "thou" from address to God and the cautious, discriminating use of inclusive language reflect current usage. Transposition of words, verses, and whole passages in the name of clarity--carried over from the New English Bible --will cause continued concern and will decrease somewhat this work's value as a study Bible. All things considered, however, this is an excellent translation that will easily find a place in public and private reading. Highly recommended.

True, Accurate and Easy to Read

The REB is not new, but new to me. I really love this version. It is as easy a read and understand as any contemporary writing, plus it is as true and accurate an English version as one can find.
Compared to the many "contemporary" or modern English versions this one is miles ahead in its scholarship and accuracy. You can rely on this one.
Compared to the other "serious" bible versions, the REB does not have the specific agenda (some say bias) of the New International Version (NIV). Plus I find it is an easier read than the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV); which I also find very good.
The REB seems to combine the best of both.

Lovely & stately, with a few imperfections

In the Psalms, the translators of the REB use "happy" instead of "blessed" (the Vulgate's word is "beatus"), so Psalm 1 begins "Happy is the one." Such tonal flatness is mildly disheartening. Happy is the sobriquet of the Mrs Nelson Rockefeller. Also, in the first psalm, the immortal rendering "his leaf does not wither" has been made to read "its foliage never fades"; we do not believe that this change is an improvement.

In Psalm 136, the refrain repeated throughout the psalm is given as "his love endures forever." We recall translations that have "mercy" instead of love, and prefer that particular rendering. The Revised Standard Version has "steadfast love," the modifier adding some strength to a noun that has been weakened by much misuse and use.

In the Song of Songs, for "Osculetur me osculo oris sui," the first verse of the Canticle, the REB gives us "May he smother me with kisses." A feasible translation, but we prefer the cadence of the New International Version's "Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth," which seems to be more accurate.

Also, in the Song of Songs, the verse that is traditionally rendered "terrible as an army with banners" is given by the REB as "majestic as the starry heavens." Is there a justification for this rendering in the original Hebrew?

We are very grateful for the inclusion of deuterocanonical books, often called the Apocrypha; some passages of Wisdom and Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) being worthy of memorization. The Apocrypha are placed intertestamentally, to coin an adverb, between the Old and the New, although this reader would not have objected if these books had been reincorporated into the Old Testament, following the lead of the Vulgate.

In the New Testament, we find a few quirks, but nothing akin to the cacophonies of the NAB. In the Canticle of Zechariah, Luke 1.68 ff., we would prefer "Blessed be" rather than "Praise to." There are some delightful Anglicisms! St Stephen's words touched his hearers "on the raw," for instance, in Acts 7.54.

John 7.53-8.11 is placed at the end of the Gospel according to St John, with the familiar caveat that some witnesses do not contain the passage. Still, to take this essential part of Sacred Scripture out of its customary place in the canon is to create an unnecessary distraction to the reader.

Am not a Scripture scholar, and am innocent of both Greek and Hebrew, but the Revised English Bible seems to be accurate most of the time, and almost always free of the graceless cacophonies of some other translations we could name. There are those who will, with good reason, continue to prefer the Revised Standard Version or the New International Version or the brave effort of Msgr Ronald Knox, but the REB is not without its merits.

Here is how the Magnificat appears in the Revised English Bible (Luke 1.46-55):

"My soul tells out the greatness of the Lord, my spirit has rejoiced in God my saviour; for he has looked with favour on his servant, lowly as she is. From this day forward all generations will count me blessed, for the Mighty God has done great things for me. His name is holy, his mercy sure from generation to generation toward those who fear him. He has shown the might of his arm, he has routed the proud and all their schemes; he has brought down monarchs from their thrones, and raised on high the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the help of Israel his servant, as he promised our forefathers; he has not forgotten to show mercy to Abraham and his children's children forever."

My opinion has subtly changed over the years...

Since I first reviewed this translation a few years ago, my view has subtly changed. While the bulk of my comments remain unchanged, I have revised this review a bit to reflect my current thoughts.

The Revised English Bible, successor in lineage to the New English Bible, as a very interesting read, though like most modern translations, it leaves me feeling rather unsure of the text. There are too many "little changes" that mean a lot to me in style from the NEB that I cannot wholeheartedly recommend this as an individuals principal Bible.

First, the good points. The REB is quite nicely typeset, and is eminently readable. The selection of fonts, sizes, and pagination is outstanding, though I have to admit to perferring the 'paragraph style' of the old NEB. The return to verse numbers in a more traditional location (i.e., in the verse itself) is welcome. The margin versification of the NEB was pretty confusing at times (the Jerusalem Bible got it right by adding a dot in at the beginning of verses that started in the middle of a line).

At one time, my favourite part of the NEB was that, while the text of regular conversation was in full-blown contemporary English, the prayers and psalter were, insofar as possible, rendered in traditional - yet readable - language.

The loss of the traditional language prayers of the Bible was of immense sadness to me at that time, because I was using the traditional Book of Common Prayer with my NEB. Over time, my viewpoint on this has changed, and I welcome the modern language in the psalter and the prayers of the Bible. Sadly, however, Psalter of the REB has many problems that take away from the poetic nature of the Psalms. I also found the Creation account to be rather poorly phrased. The use of inclusive language is noticed and somewhat bemoaned by me, but I am somewhat conservative on that account, so take that as you will.

For those seeking a poetic translation, I would highly recommend the Jerusalem Bible, but the REB is a useful translation with many good points.

Transition to new life

It's the second book by Svetlana( Stalin's daughter)about her own life, about her Transition Year when she managed to get out and stay out of USSR! It takes a very strong person to make such decision and follow it through. Even if it means to leave her (young adult) children behind!
Svetlana had no illusions about her father dark side but she loved him dearly as a daughter. You could see her as a very educated, hard working and kind woman.
I would like to meet Svetlana in person one day.

I love this book!

I love this book and this woman.She is so intelligent and kind hearted which is amazing considering who raised her! Her story sucked me in from beginning to end; from the amazing and resilient people she knew and shared stories about to the history and inside scoop of the communist regime in the 50s and 60s as well as her delving back to the 30s and the sad story of her mother, Stalin's wife.
Also her writing is wonderful ...from Moscow to Northern India to New York...to Arizona to Wisconsin..I could not put it down.

Intentionally Irreverent, Accidentally Inspiring: A Male Point of View

You’re probably wondering why a man is reviewing a book that was so clearly written for women. For starters, you’re not the boss of me. Secondly, body positivity is universal. If you’ve ever been given a sideways look while eating in public, had a complete stranger offer advice on how to “fix” you, or skipped a school function because you’re afraid of how your size will deflect ridicule to your child; you’re in this group, and this book is for you. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, here’s why EVERYONE should read this book; men, women or otherwise.

I flipped to the first page expecting all the things I have come to appreciate from reading Brittany’s blog, following her social media posts, and meeting her in person: willful irreverence, period-specific pop culture references, and slightly cringe-worthy discussions of the hornet’s nest that is the female existence (read: periods, boob sweat, and the like).

And I got it.

I got all the hilarious, foul-mouthed, sexy, movie reference-fueled perspectives and narratives that I was hoping for in a Brittany Gibbons book. As a fan, I’d have been satisfied with that. What I didn’t expect was a series of life stories, experiences, and supremely human moments, all of them told with such a stark honesty that I found myself tearing up on a crowded airplane wondering what the hell was happening with this “comedy” book I was reading.

Reading Fat Girl Walking as a man is like spying on all girls sleepover; not the adolescent fantasy replete with baby doll nighties and pillow fights, but the real, raw, unguarded emotion that only women communing with women feel comfortable sharing.

This book will shock you. Not in the normal boring, “did she really just say that” kind of way, but in the devastating frankness and transparency Brittany shows in the recounting of her life experiences, her rise to “internet famous”, and the long hard road behind her as she defined and refined her message into becoming the resounding voice, smirking face and gorgeous body at the front of this movement

This book will make you cry. There are moments of such humanity and realness that the only response that feels natural is a physical one. Brittany weaves these between humor and levity in a way that never lets you fall too far. I found myself cheering for her and screaming at her as she fumbled through the missteps of her youth and early adulthood as they resonated a little too close to home. Eventually landing right where she belongs, and lighting the path for those behind her.

Maybe, just maybe, this book will inspire you. I feel like I was inspired by Fat Girl Walking as a byproduct. If someone tells me a book is inspirational, I immediately reject it as drivel or something conjured by a distant PhD or B-list celeb that wants a summer home. Brittany set out to tell a story, in her inimitable voice, and entertain the hell out of anyone lucky enough to pick up a copy. This book is inspirational, but I don’t think it meant to be.

Sometimes the fat girl gets cast as the funny friend, and ends up being the star.

I implore you to get Fat Girl Walking by the great Brittany Gibbons

If you read nothing else, I implore you to get Fat Girl Walking by the great Brittany Gibbons. There's a reason she's a writer and I'm not because I can't even form the words to tell you how good this book is. I laughed. I cried. I shouted me too! repeatedly. Trust me when I tell you the only disappointment you'll feel upon finishing it is that her next book isn't out yet.

Funny! Relatable! Quick read with a good message for all!

I enjoyed this book and I am not generally a nonfiction fan! If you are a "fat girl walking" like me, you will relate to many of the stories Brittany tells. You will laugh out loud and want to shed a tear once in a while. The message of body acceptance is good for skinny, fat and in between women. One thing that took the book from 4 stars to 3 for me was how it began chronologically but later lost its way and you end up going back and forth from one year to another. This makes it difficult to really see how her career evolved. One day she's on her couch on a laptop and the next she is on all the morning shows. There is a point when I felt like the author just wants to give us a laundry list of all her accomplishments and the book loses focus and some of the good storytelling it began with. Again, it was a worthwhile read and I took the message to heart right down to standing in front of my full length mirror naked ( author's subtle advice)! I would recommend it for a light nonfiction read.
