Nothing else like it...

I love this book because frankly, there is really nothing else like it. It's part studio visit, part archeological dig, and part meditation on the hidden inspirations, magical objects and rituals that propel an artist's practice. The book is also a thoughtful memoir of the author's visits to the studios of extraordinary contemporary artists like Gary Panter, Jill Magid, Byron Kim, Aaron Curry, Kerry Tribe, David Altmejd, John Baldessari and many many others. The writing is intelligent, the stories are intimate and full of warmth and humor. STUDIO LIFE is a welcome reminder that behind every public work of art is a very private world.

A fascinating, beautiful book

The book opens the doors into spaces and lives one would rarely get to see. And once inside, it shows the particularities that make each artist's studio and practice unique. Patterns emerge, but what comes across is the studio as a reflection of the artist's mind. Every thing is lovingly photographed and back stories emerge. The conversations convey a sense of the intimacy of the studio visit with a fellow artist. The cumulative effect of the one hundred studio profiles is a portrait of contemporary studio life in America.

It's all about the process!

Getting this book was a nice surprise--it offers a really interesting and alternate take on what makes artists tick in their studios. The book doesn't really show pretty, composed, overall studio shots, but if you want an insightful, down and dirty look at HOW artists work, get this book. Its much more documentary-style in its approach, really about process, and I loved pouring over the huge amount of images--many unexpected details and objects. Really appreciated the longer entries of William Wegman, Tony Oursler, Jim Shaw, and Gary Panter.

About the Author
Diana Hacker personally class-tested her handbooks with nearly four thousand students over thirty-five years at Prince George’s Community College in Maryland, where she was a member of the English faculty. Hacker handbooks, built on innovation and on a keen understanding of the challenges facing student writers, are the most widely adopted in America. Hacker handbooks, all published by Bedford/St. Martin’s, include The Bedford Handbook, Eighth Edition (2010); A Writer’s Reference, Seventh Edition (2011); Rules for Writers, Sixth Edition (2008); and A Pocket Style Manual, Fifth Edition (2008).Nancy Sommers, who has taught composition and directed composition programs for thirty years, now teaches writing and mentors new writing teachers at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education.  She led Harvard’s Expository Writing Program for twenty years, directing the first-year writing program and establishing Harvard’s WAC program. Get this f@#$ing book right now, it will help you so much.

Let me start by saying that I HATE college, I HATE reading, I HATE writing, and I HATE textbooks. But I LOVE this book.

This... this handy little book is a thousand times more awesome than the internet. So much easier to get TONS of super specific citations. Every time I look up how to cite things I get some annoying outdated or inaccurate website that doesn't include new media from which to cite. This book tells you how to cite a tweet on TWITTER. That's plenty up to date if you ask me, and such a valuable addition to my bookshelf. If your prof says get this, get it. If your prof does not, still buy it. And make sure to literally BUY it. Do not rent it. B U Y T H E B O O K because you will be referring to it constantly through your college years and possibly even way after you've earned your degree. I use it constantly and I would be so lost without it. This book straight up got me on the Dean's list and helped me get the grades I need for my career in psychology.

Great book!

I like this book a lot. It was one of the recommendations to my English class. They provide online access to exercises that can help a lot if you take them seriously. The only issue I would say about The Bedford Handbook is that sometimes the reading doesn't follow a patter because we are always recommended to go back to different pages. Ex. let's say you are reading p. 250 and they say 'p. 145 has more details'. I mean, it is ok, but I would rather the book has followed a sequence. Anyways, I recommend the book!

An Eye Opener

The reason why I give this book a five star is because it meets my expection. I am planning to start a class in our congregation on the Power in the Blood of Jesus. Any believer that does not have this book in their home don't know what they are missing. This is a Holy Spirit breath book, and I thank our God for using Dr. D.K. Olukoya to give us this wealth of information. Therefore I adminish every Christian to purchase this book.

Essential reading for any Madness fan

John Reed presents a history from the band's origins as the North London Invaders in 1976 to their breakup in 1986, through their reunion at Madstock in 1992 up to the band's 2009 magnum opus "The Liberty of Norton Folgate." The author doesn't make any judgments, but rather presents the good with the bad and lets the reader draw his or her own conclusions. I'm a diehard Madness fan, and I love them even more after reading this book.

The Ultimate Madness Story

This book is the ultimate Madness story for fans. Written long after the band broke up, it doesn't whitewash their story like books written during their heyday might have. It's extensive and honest. It provides an interesting look at the bands beginnings, their popularity during the 80s, and what they've been up to since then.

Tells you both everything and nothing about Madness

On page 235 of this book the author writes "It's difficult to ascertain whether Barson's decision [to quit the band] was due to [...] or [...] or [...] or [...] or a combination of the above". Think about this for a moment - a 536 page book about Madness and the author cannot explain one of the key - if not the key - events in the band's history. The problem here is that Reed did not actually speak to any of the members of the band while writing this book, instead relying on previously published interviews, the opinions of members of their entourage, and even album sleeve notes. What you end up with is a meticulous list of things that Madness did but without any real insight or understanding of why they did them. Shame really, as Reed displays an obvious fondness for the band and an eye for detail elsewhere. However, I've heard that Suggs' recently published autobiography does not delve too deeply into the workings of Madness, so this might be the best study of the Nutty Boys on the market. For the time being, anyway.

This moving and astonishing biography tells the improbable story of India-born Srinavasa Ramanujan Iyengar, self-taught mathematical prodigy. In 1913 Ramanujan, a 25-year-old clerk who had flunked out of two colleges, wrote a letter filled with startlingly original theorems to eminent English mathematician G. H. Hardy. Struck by the Indian's genius, Hardy, member of the Cambridge Apostles and an obsessive cricket aficionado, brought Ramanujan to England. Over the next five years, the vegetarian Brahmin who claimed his discoveries were revealed to him by a Hindu goddess turned out influential mathematical propositions. Cut off from his young Indian wife left at home and emotionally neglected by fatherly yet aloof Hardy, Ramanujan returned to India in 1919, depressed, sullen and quarrelsome; he died one year later of tuberculosis. Kanigel ( Apprentice to Genius ) gives nontechnical readers the flavor of how Ramanujan arrived at his mathematical ideas, which are used today in cosmology and computer science. This biography traces the life of one of the greatest geniuses of the 20th century, Ramanujan. This incredibly brilliant Indian mathematician, working alone in relative obscurity and lacking the usual academic credentials, could easily have passed unnoticed. However, with the help of a handful of friends and the ultimate support of renowned English mathematician G.H. Hardy, his work was brought to the attention of the world. When he died in 1920 at 32 he had become a folk-hero in his own country. He left a rich lode of original mathematics, which is still being mined today. This extremely well-researched and well-written biography is a "must" addition to any library collection.

An Extraordinary Biography

This is a captivating, illuminating, and deeply moving biography of the Indian mathematical genius S. Ramanujan. Genius is always enigmatic, and mathematical genius doubly so to the general reader for whom math will always be a closed book. One of the extraordinary things about this biography is Kanigel's gift for mathematical exposition at the layman level. As a mathematician myself, I can only say I've never seen its equal. Although to some extent he is helped by the "elementary" nature of much of R.'s work -- its gist can be grasped with only a basic understanding of calculus -- the task is still daunting. Yet everything is clearly and correctly explained, freshly, succinctly, memorably.

Kanigel's book is equally rich in human terms, too. His portrait of R. shows not only a genius but also a simple, spontaneous, likeable man. R. must have been the world's worst math tutor -- one shudders at the thought -- yet people liked him. This was a crucial factor in R.'s getting the opportunity to bring his gifts to full flower, for heaven and earth had to be moved. It's sad to think of the other Ramanujans in India and elsewhere who, crushed by life's hardships, were never able to develop or perhaps even recognize their gifts.

I take issue with the previous reviewer concerning Kanigel's treatment of Hardy. Hardy is a complex and fascinating figure in his own right and his personality needs to be explored in the context of his relationship with R. His homosexuality was a part of the constellation and a factor in his championing of the underdog (including women in mathematics), his openness to the unorthodox, and his willingness to take risks. Although bound by their common love for mathematics, the two men were otherwise poles apart both temperamentally and culturally. This contrast adds further interest and poignancy to the already romantic, Cinderella-like story of R.'s brief life in this world, and Mr. Kanigel makes the most of it.

A touching biography

Im not too fond of biographies, but I would give this book an exception.
The life of Ramanujan is amazing and one is pushed to only awe the limits of mind. Being an Indian, I can see Robert Kanigel has given a comprehensive treatment to all facets of the life of Ramanujan - his boyhood days in small town of Kumbakonam, his obsession with Maths, his seperation from Mother and his wife, his relationship with Hardy and others, his stay in London, and his final days. Kanigel has really done a wonderful job in depicting the Brahmin house-hold of the early 1900s. One could really imagine Ramanujan with a tuft and a religious symbol on forehead, but his mind calculating 10,000 th decimal of pi.
His purely professional relations with Hardy has also been very deftly depicted. How hard the days must have been! Being a Ramanujan's biography its hard to avoid mathematical formulas - and the author justifiably includes them when necessary. But even if you do not understand them - you can just wonder at the string of symbols joined together to purport some meaning.
The narration is truly captivating. It sends an horripulating feeling to the mind, when Hardy describes the first letter of formulas as "These must be true. If they are not, nobody would have the audacity to invent it."
The final days of Ramanujan are indeed sad and emotional and also beautifuly captured in the book. Typical is the life of geniuses - the world has hard time understanding them. This book is really worth in my library.

An exploration of genius in the colonial condition ....

Kanigel's is the first book I've read on Ramanujan. It is well put together and explores the elements of the man, South India and Cambridge that led to the "collaboration" which allowed Ramanujan to flourish and be "discovered" by the West. Mathematics and Science is Planetary in scope, whereas cultures and colonialism, idiosyncracies of Universities, constraints of poverty, all in some way deny us the fruits of genius, whom I daresay are "normally" distributed in all populations! Nurture, in the true and fullest sense of the word, allows the light to shine through. Ramanujan's letter to Hardy is a classic! It is the essence of understatement, he may have been uneducated in the purely formal sense, but he was quite aware of the world he was to be reluctantly invited to join. His gifts are rare, his powers abundantly evident, there is no use debating how much longer he may have lived, if both he and Hardy understood the difficulties of a South Indian clerk attempting to live in Cambridge. The collaboration brings into sharp relief, the genarally accepted notion that in most endeavours of man, critical mass, or an informed bouncing wall/mirror brings out the best. Does Hingis give of her best against a weak opponent? Doesn't Michael Jordon reach deep when there is half a minute and five points to score? Would Karpov have ramped up his game had Fischer allowed him a match? Ramanujan may have contributed much more had he survived even two more Summers. As it stands his contribution is so outstanding that his notebooks still give up useful gems to knowledge-hungry post-graduate students. Kanigel's book is a must read for anyone interested in the history of Mathematics, anyone interested in harnessing the powers of genius, the relationships among nature and nurture, genes and culture etc. Good companion reading would include the lives of Richard Feynman, John Maynard Keynes and anything on the Manhattan Project to name but a few.

TAMMY GIBSON is a Senior QlikView Consultant at Natural Synergies. She's been developing QlikView solutions since 2004. She is also the co-founder and CTO of VenueCube, a company providing business intelligence analytics to entertainment venues and convention centers.

CHARLES LEICHTWEIS is a Senior Advisor of Phoenix Strategic Advisors and the head of their Sustainable Profitable Growth Practice. Charlie has led companies in a variety of "C" suite roles in a career that spans 30 plus years. He holds an MBA in Operations Management, and is a CPA and CMA.

This is a really great BI-book, which take the reader the whole journey ...

At last. This is a really great BI-book, which take the reader the whole journey from business demands to where the data is placed in the relational databases. From the relational model it guides the reader through the transformation to a dimensional model, which is really great. There are not many books that do this in such a well explained way. When you have your dimensional model, the book then guids you in the QlikView GUI-work. So it takes you the whole journey!

you need to get it!

Just finished reading a recently published book for QlikView developers and super users QlikView Your Business: An expert guide to Business Discovery with QlikView and Qlik Sense by Oleg Troyansky, Tammy Gibson and Charlie Leichtweis.

I met Oleg Troyansky at Qlik World Conference in Orlando in 2014 and exchanged a couple emails with him before. I read his blog and learned a lot from it. I knew that Oleg contributed a lot of his time to Qlik community forum since 2005 and have been using Qlikview since 2002. Needless to say, my expectations were pretty high.

Please do not be fooled by the name of the book - it might give you an impression that the book was written for business users only. It is not. It is truly an expert guide which will take your skills to the next level.

The books starts easy on you, explaining basic concepts but it is important and unique in a way that these concepts are explained in the context of real business problems.

Newbies will certainly appreciate step-by-step assignments, neatly formatted code that you can actually read and a lot of illustrations.

Being very picky about UI and design, I enjoyed the choice of colors, fonts and the neat and clean design of the book and example dashboards.

By the time you finish the book, you will master very advanced concepts (and they are not for the fainthearted!)

To name a few:

Concatenated tables to store multiple fact tables vs. linked fact tables
Generic link tables
"as of date" tables
Advanced set analysis expressions built dynamically on the fly
Numerous recommendations on how to optimize performance for large data sets
Expressions reuse using external files
While I was familiar with most of these concepts, it was really helpful to see how to apply them to real business problems. Not only authors did a great job explaining these tough techniques, they suggested a lot of hints and took time to provide alternative options, not forcing readers to pick the only "right" one, but encouraging them to choose the best method given the circumstances.

As experienced certified QlikView developer and after reading countless blogs, 5 QlikView books, hundreds of white papers and forum posts, I still learned a lot from this book. I can relate to everything that Oleg and his colleagues explain in the book. I appreciate that authors teach reader the best practices and explain the pitfalls and dangers of quick and dirty methods that I see a lot.

Has the book met my high expectations? My answer is absolutely! Really great job, Oleg and the team! I will recommend this book now to my colleagues and I think your book will take the first place now for me. My old favorite book QlikView 11 for Developers by Miguel García and Barry Harmsen would have to take the second place!

Both books are great and I think you have to have both if you are serious about QlikView development!

A welcome alternative to "QlikView for Developers"

As a reader of Amazon reviews, I strongly favor those which name alternatives to the product being reviewed, and can tell me why I might want to pick one or the other. Only one of the existing reviews of "QlikView Your Business" (let me call it QVYB) acknowledges an alternative - "QlikView for Developers" by Garcia and Harmsen - but dismisses it without any explanation. "QlikView for Developers" (QVD, then) is indeed the book to beat, the reigning champ, and the question should be: which one should I get?

My perhaps-disappointing answer is "Both - the choice is a matter of personal preference". I do not see QVYB's coverage of Qlik Sense's front-end [to clarify: the back-end is shared with QlikView, and is discussed in QlikView chapters] as a major advantage: you can easily catch up by actually playing with Qlik Sense. On the other hand, I do put a premium on QVYB's visual appeal: while QVD is a no-frills, brutally typeset, black-and-white affair, QVYB is a nice-to-look-at book with color illustrations. It is also a book that seeks to appeal to a non-IT person, by presenting QlikView via a set of dashboard-building exercises, motivated by business-case vignettes. This approach makes for lighter if bulkier reading - and you get a working QlikView document in the end if you have followed the steps - but consider the alternative offered by QVD, where the tool's features are explored one by one, in many mini-exercises. In my opinion, the second approach is easier on the reader: it does not make you run before you learned to walk, and you get to spend more time learning about the actual software. (The thinner QVD does lead on scope, or "feature count").

I expect more experienced QlikView users to stick with QVD - Stephen Redmond's books are, in my opinion, where you find the more advanced, practical things, "shown-off" in QVYB - but QVYB is certainly a good, serious book to check out. My recommendation to QlikView or Qlik Sense novices would be to get both books, and my expectation is that you will prefer QVYB, but turn to QVD for backup.

PS. I am a QlikView Certified Developer in an, ahem, complex relationship with Qlik's software. Part of the ill will has been due to the un-modern GUI, which required me to go through five screens to change a setting, and - in version 10 or 11, for Chrissakes! - did not have the visual-alignment-helper feature which I take for granted in SSRS or even SSIS. The look-and-feel of finished dashboards, too, seemed dated and lacking: adequate, but never pretty. Then there was the way QlikView was used at my workplace, where QlikView dashboards came to be the *only* (non-Excel) form of BI, at the expense of *reports*, and with quick-and-dirty spreadsheet-based ETL data flows bypassing the company's database. (Predictably, this was a SQL Server database, but the company's Qlik-obsessed CTO was not interested in *free* SSRS, PowerView and PowerPivot). A couple of months ago, my interest in the Qlik way was rekindled by Qlik Sense - and then I discovered that Qlik Sense Desktop did not play along with Windows Server 2012, my new employer's OS of choice. (Macs are out of the question, of course). I e-mailed two Qlik marketing people, asking for help in arranging a Qlik Sense Server trial in my company. If you thought that they would jump at the invitation - after all, this is what they are angling for? - you would be mistaken: there has been further Qlik spam, but no progress on my request. A marketing person from Tableau, on the other hand, made a very positive impression, offering links to useful resources and a quick response to a technical question. (Tableau books, I note, are also more polished than Qlik books). Naturally, cost is a major factor, but the way things look now, I am inclined to nudge my company towards Tableau, not Qlik Sense. (And most definitely not QlikView, whose future is now uncertain). If I had a word of advice for Qlik's CEO, it would be to stop writing forewords to QlikView books, and invest the time in improving the product and the service. Being clear about your product's differences vs. its actual competitors, Tableau and PowerBI, instead of [un-named: Rule 1 of Qlik's marketing department is "Never name a competing product"] OLAP tools, might also help.

PS. Revisited Qlik Sense recently and ... lost an hour's work due to "Failed to get app because there is no app loaded" error - meaning a permanently corrupted Qlik Sense file. Google the error message and see the "happened to me too!" sobs of other developers, and silence from Qlik Sense staff. Tableau all the way!

A very very helpful guide with all important Italian phrases and daily expressions.
I borrowed this book to at least know the most common phrases I might need in travelling through Italy. I was not disappointed.

This was a fun book that helped me a lot in my struggle to master Italian. I have been studying Italian for four years now and I was looking for some conversational material in order to improve my vocabulary. This book provides a lot of useful phrases and common expressions in Italian. If you're trying to speak like a native, this is an excellent resource to start with.
