The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury

The Martian Chronicles, a seminal work in Ray Bradbury's career, whose extraordinary power and imagination remain undimmed by time's passage, is available from Simon & Schuster for the first time.

In The Martian Chronicles, Ray Bradbury, America’s preeminent storyteller, imagines a place of hope, dreams, and metaphor— of crystal pillars and fossil seas—where a fine dust settles on the great empty cities of a vanished, devastated civilization. Earthmen conquer Mars and then are conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient, mysterious native race. In this classic work of fiction, Bradbury exposes our ambitions, weaknesses, and ignorance in a strange and breathtaking world where man does not belong.

Amazon.com Review
From "Rocket Summer" to "The Million-Year Picnic," Ray Bradbury's stories of the colonization of Mars form an eerie mesh of past and future. Written in the 1940s, the chronicles drip with nostalgic atmosphere--shady porches with tinkling pitchers of lemonade, grandfather clocks, chintz-covered sofas. But longing for this comfortable past proves dangerous in every way to Bradbury's characters--the golden-eyed Martians as well as the humans. Starting in the far-flung future of 1999, expedition after expedition leaves Earth to investigate Mars. The Martians guard their mysteries well, but they are decimated by the diseases that arrive with the rockets. Colonists appear, most with ideas no more lofty than starting a hot-dog stand, and with no respect for the culture they've displaced.

Bradbury's quiet exploration of a future that looks so much like the past is sprinkled with lighter material. In "The Silent Towns," the last man on Mars hears the phone ring and ends up on a comical blind date. But in most of these stories, Bradbury holds up a mirror to humanity that reflects a shameful treatment of "the other," yielding, time after time, a harvest of loneliness and isolation. Yet the collection ends with hope for renewal, as a colonist family turns away from the demise of the Earth towards a new future on Mars. Bradbury is a master fantasist and The Martian Chronicles are an unforgettable work of art. --Blaise Selby

Great Ironic Social Criticism in Science Fantasy Form
By Donald Mitchell
This book clearly deserves more than five stars. It is one of the most moving and important set of observations about our human issues ever written in either science fiction or science fantasy form.
Ray Bradbury wrote these short stories in the late 1940s at a time when we knew almost nothing about Mars. Some scientists even thought there were probably canals and the remnants of a dead or dying Martian civilization on Mars. Written as science fiction originally by Mr. Bradbury, our growing knowledge of Mars makes these assumptions science fantasy today. But don't let that shift rob these stories of their power over you.
But Mars was just the setting for a more serious set of questions. Mr. Bradbury was concerned that the world was too full of hate, war, short-sightedness, and greed to amount to much. He despaired as to whether humans would survive the discovery of the atomic bomb. From this raw material of human excess, he stitched together a powerful vision of our choices -- to operate at our best . . . or our worst. He appeals to our better selves in a vivid way that will be unforgettable to you, if you are like me.
The development of the book has an interesting history. Mr. Bradbury was in his late twenties, and had written quite a few short stories. While visiting New York, he showed his short stories to publishers who liked them. The publishers advised him that there was a market for novels, but not much of one for books of short stories. Then one night it hit him, he had the raw material for a novel about Mars if he simply wrote a few transition stories to fit with ones he had already written. He sat up late that night writing the book proposal, and sold it the next day. That concept became The Martian Chronicles.
Mr. Bradbury had recently read Winesburg, Ohio and was impressed by that book with the potential to use a series of stories as a way to tell a community's history. It seemed natural to use that structure for his Martian book.
The book covers a time period from 1999 through 2026, starting with the first manned expedition to Mars from Earth. The American astronauts do find Martians. The complications of the first four expeditions come from the interactions between humans and Martians, and are unexpected and intriguing. The stories explore the implications of a race being telepathic in very revealing ways.
Much of the human colonization of Mars in the book pits those who want to recreate Earth against those who appreciate what is special about Mars. So exploitation versus conservation is one theme in the book. As a backdrop for the stories, you will read about all of the themes of the Westward migration in the United States from the eradication of the native peoples and culture, to excess exploitation of natural resources, to the desire to be free of "civilized" society.
There are wonderful stories in here against racisim, censorship of books (which became the basis of Mr. Bradbury's later book, "Farenheit 451"), and war.
Towards the end of the book is a lovely sequence of three stories about the various meanings of loneliness. I particularly recommend them. The first looks at men and women seeking each other out when there is no other company. The second considers the loss of a family and how to cope with that. The third looks ruefully at the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust.
The last story in The Martian Chronicles, "The Million-Year Picnic," causes me to shiver and moves me almost to tears every time I think about it. From that story, you will be able to answer the famous question in the book, "Who are the Martians?"
By the way, the book is much better than the movie. If you think you know the story from the movie, I suggest you read the book. If you have a choice of one or the other, I definitely suggest the book.
By the way, years later Mr. Bradbury reviewed this book and commented that the world had turned out much better than he had hoped. He said that would have written a different kind of book on the same subject in the 1970s, but he still had great respect for what the young man he was in his twenties who had written The Martian Chronicles.
The manned exploration of Mars is probably our greatest and most important challenge as a species. Yet, we pay little attention to the question now. I suggest that you use your reading of The Martian Chronicles to help reignite a discussion with those you know of what our goals and methods should be concerning Mars.
Reach for the stars . . . to create the fullest human potential and accomplishments -- morally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

This is not Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles
By Hal Sawyer
This book has been extensively altered from the original and classic Martian Chronicles. All of the dates Bradbury used in the chapter headings have been changed, rendering the Cold War/Atomic Age context of the book meaningless. One of the most important chapters "Way in the Middle of the Air", which establishes the violence and hatred endemic in the American culture which invades Mars has been completely removed from the book. An additional, inferior chapter, "The Fire Balloons" which was never part of the original book, has been put in its place. Don't buy this re-hash, find an older version and buy that.

Don't get this Version!
By R. R.
I love The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. It's a Five Star book however due to censorship I give it a one star. It has great short stories and make your think about things, especially for the time period it was written. It's a quick and easy read. With that said, my issue with this version is the publishers have censored it taking out one of the chapters due to racism, usage of the "N" word. I'm very much against book censorship and would want them to update it to leave the book to it's original intent or for the readers not get this version. Please look for the book in its intentional form.

Just So-So
By Tonya Schulte
I bought this book to use as a resource in a drama class that I teach. In my class I usually have students pick a monologue at the beginning of the year and then improve on their performance of it as we go, finally performing it at the annual recital. I was looking for some new material. This book is just okay. A few of the monologues are good, most are just so-so and none are really fantastic. My biggest problem with most of them is that there seems to be very little room for character building. Also, most of them are based on situations which are somewhat cliche. I was hoping for something with more depth and a bit more interesting. Not a total waste of money, but I probably could have found something better.

A Middle School Theatre Teacher's Critique
By Amazon Customer
I teach theatre to middle schoolers and bought this book as a quick fix monologue book. There are some very cute monologues, and they're easy to memorize for the most inexperienced thespian. The book is well organized, and the subject matter covered isn't heavy (which I found a relief with how much negative stimuli kids have these days), and the pages are easy to copy. However, if you're looking for really AWESOME monologues you might be disappointed. It's not Tennyson or Shakespeare (none of my students would have wanted Tennyson or Shakespeare). Overall, I would say the book serves it's purpose. Oh, and my students enjoyed their monologues.

Book Description

In his book, Debt is Slavery, Michael Mihalik describes the 10 steps he personally used to gain control of his finances and pay off a large amount of debt.

The key to Mihalik's method is changing the way people think about money. Mihalik contends that people who do not change their perceptions about money will never succeed in improving how they handle their finances because all action is born from thought.

Mihalik's first technique is described in the title - equating debt with slavery. While this idea may seem extreme to some, people who are burdened with debt will definitely understand how borrowing money puts them in financial servitude to the lender. Successfully equating debt with slavery stops people from accumulating more debt, which is the first step towards recovery (similar to stopping the leak in a sinking boat prior to bailing out the water).

Mihalik goes on to describe other powerful ideas such as equating money with time (to eliminate unnecessary spending), evaluating the hidden cost of possessions, and avoiding the insidious influence of ubiquitous marketing. As the reader progresses through the book, their perceptions about money will transform until by Chapter 9, they will truly believe they can 'Save 50 Percent of Your Salary'. The book ends with an in-depth description of a simple way to plan your finances.

The author states in the introduction that because people are busy and do not want to be distracted by 'fluff', he has boiled the book down to the absolute basics. The result is a hard-hitting book that is 128 pages cover-to-cover. There is a gem on every page and even the busiest person can find time to read this powerful book.

From the Publisher
In the past, Americans were taught to avoid debt. Now, we are persuaded to embrace it. The process starts early--high school students receive credit card solicitations although their only income may be from babysitting or mowing the neighbor's lawn. We take on debt without realizing that doing so subjects us to financial servitude--a form of slavery--in which our bills determine when and how much we work, often at jobs we don't even like.

The result? U.S. consumer debt recently hit an all-time high of $2.35 trillion and millions of Americans are struggling to make ends meet.

Debt is Slavery offers hope. The book takes a unique approach to personal finance by focusing on changing the way people think about money. The author uses his personal triumph over paralyzing debt to illustrate 10 lessons that will transform the reader's relationship with money so they too can pay off their debt, reclaim their freedom, and lead more fulfilling and prosperous lives.

About the Author

Michael Mihalik accumulated a huge amount of debt by using credit cards to finance a lifestyle he couldn't afford. He struggled with debt for years before discovering that before he could change how he handled his finances, he had to change the way he thought about money.

He created 10 ideas and techniques that literally transformed his life. Today, he is debt-free and financially secure. His book, Debt is Slavery, teaches others how to use the same ideas and methods to gain control of their finances, pay off their debt, and experience more fulfilling lives free from the shackles of debt.

Very basic introduction to the subject...maybe that is a good thing though?
By Dan
This is not my first book on managing finances. I have read Dave Ramsey's books and also several others so I am familiar with the message. What attracted me to this book is the title which suggests that the author may introduce us to some new ideas. After reading the book, I didn't learn anything that I haven't already heard.

The book itself is short with big print. You can finish it within an hour or less. In some ways I would say that the brevity is a good thing because it keeps your attention till the end. With a much larger book, you might not finish it if you get bored with it or if you just don't like reading bigger books. The author does say that he chose to keep the book short for this reason so I can't hold it against him.

Basically, the message of the book is that debt is bad, possessions are bad, money is time, marketing tries to separate you from your money, how to create a basic budget, and a few other topics. Again, nothing new here.

I actually enjoyed the first eight chapters but I wasn't a big fan of the author's budget in chapter 10. I like Dave Ramsey's plan from his book "The Total Money Makeover" better. Actually, budgeting is a very personal thing; you should create a budget that works for you not something that works for someone else.

It was also nice to read a book that emphasized the idea that spending makes you a slave to your money and that possessions are a prison. Sometimes when I see people who buy cars, fancy clothes, electronics, and other things, I automatically assume that they must have lots of money to afford those things. This book helped emphasize the point that many of those people may be "all flash and no cash" or as the author puts it..."big hat, no cattle" (from page 48). So just because other people are buying iPads, BMW's, or other luxuries, that doesn't necessarily mean that they are doing better than you and that you should buy the same things; They might just be victims of the "GMM."

One part of the book that I don't agree with is that the author suggests that you close your credit cards (after you have paid them off of course) to avoid the temptation of spending. The idea may be the most sensible but when you factor in the damage that it will do to your credit score, I can't believe he would suggest such an idea. You should pay off your credit cards and then just shred them or hide them. Closing them is a very dumb move as it lowers your credit to debt ratio.

Other than that, I thought it was a great introduction to the subject but nothing more than an introduction. Because books cost money and you are not supposed to waste your money, I have to give it three stars for the content. I will give anybody who writes a book about personal finance five stars for effort because debt really is slavery and everybody needs to be educated on how to get their finances in order so that they can experience freedom.

In the end, personal finance is not a science nor is it only understood by really smart people or the wealthy; it is simply common sense and discipline. If you don't change those habits that are getting you into debt, then you will always run into debt and you will never get ahead. If we all had the discipline to live within our means, we wouldn't even need to read books like this.

This book is pretty basic and to the point
By Amazon Customer
This book is pretty basic and to the point . I personally have always believed that debt is essentially slavery in a modern society. I think every US citizen could benefit from reading this book regardless of your financial background and/or age. Michael speaks truth and you can't argue with that. Great book.

Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function, by Nancy Craig, Rachel Green, Carol Greider, Gisela Storz, Cynthia Wolberger, Orna Cohen

The biological world operates on a multitude of scales - from molecules to tissues to organisms to ecosystems. Throughout these myriad levels runs a common thread: the communication and onward passage of information, from cell to cell, from organism to organism and ultimately, from generation to generation. But how does this information come alive to govern the processes that constitute life? The answer lies in the molecular components that cooperate through a series of carefully-regulated processes to bring the information in our genome to life. These components and processes lie at the heart of one of the most fascinating subjects to engage the minds of scientists today: molecular biology.

Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function, Second Edition, offers a fresh approach to the teaching of molecular biology by focusing on the commonalities that exist between the three kingdoms of life, and discussing the differences between the three kingdoms to offer instructive insights into molecular processes and components. This gives students an accurate depiction of our current understanding of the conserved nature of molecular biology, and the differences that underpin biological diversity. Additionally, an integrated approach demonstrates how certain molecular phenomena have diverse impacts on genome function by presenting them as themes that recur throughout the book, rather than as artificially separated topics

As an experimental science, molecular biology requires an appreciation for the approaches taken to yield the information from which concepts and principles are deduced. Experimental Approach panels throughout the text describe research that has been particularly valuable in elucidating difference aspects of molecular biology. Each panel is carefully cross-referenced to the discussion of key molecular biology tools and techniques, which are presented in a dedicated chapter at the end of the book. Molecular Biology further enriches the learning experience with full-color artwork, end-of-chapter questions and summaries, suggested further readings grouped by topic, and an extensive glossary of key terms.

Features:
A focus on the underlying principles of molecular biology equips students with a robust conceptual framework on which to build their knowledge
An emphasis on their commonalities reflects the processes and components that exist between bacteria, archae, and eukaryotes
Experimental Approach panels demonstrate the importance of experimental evidence by describing research that has been particularly valuable in the field

Review
Review from previous edition While I rarely make textbooks the core of my teaching material, the general presentation of material and interleaving of research results and methods is very similar to my preferred teaching strategy. That is what led me to adopt this remarkable textbook for use in my class. Richard S. Myers, University of Miami I believe the strengths of the text are the organization and layout, with simple diagrams & headings that make mental organization easier for the students. Julia Frugoli, Clemson University I am delighted with Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function. It explains material extremely well. It has a nice balance of detail and focus on understanding the overall process. It is fantastically up to date. Barbara C. Hoopes, Colgate University - Hamilton, NY I would highly recommend this book to any colleague who was considering instituting a basic class in molecular biology. Andrew J. Andres, University of Nevada - Las Vegas

An awesome "central dogma" book.
By Gavin Scott
I'm comparing this book (MB) to Molecular Biology of the Cell (MBoC), which is probably my favorite textbook of all time.

This one (MB) is not as much of a general cell biology book as it primarily covers only the elements of the so-called "central dogma" of molecular biology. DNA replication and transcription into RNA, and RNA translation into protein, plus all the regulatory aspects of those processes (as well as chapters on the cell cycle, DNA repair, transposable elements, and genomics), unlike MBoC which spends more or less the first half of the book on those topics and then devotes the second half to the further biology of the Cell, covering things like membranes, energy conversion, cell signalling, cancer, and the immune system.

Both books do a good job of introducing the Biochemistry you need in order to understand what follows. MB has a great first chapter that gives an overview of the book (basically "Molecular Biology in 30 pages").

Where MB shines though is in its more in-depth coverage of the topics it touches on. It devotes about twice as many pages to these topics as the current edition of MBoC does. MB is also wonderfully illustrated and does a good job of visually explaining things. MB contains lots of "experimental" panels that talk about how various aspects of the cell were discovered.

Both books include chapters on techniques for manipulating the genetic material in cells. I thought the current edition of MBoC felt slightly more up to date, but both books are very current editions with a good overview of the current state of the art.

Both books are quite readable. I would give the edge to MBoC here in terms of ease of reading as MB seems just a bit denser to me. But both are very easily understandable.

I can highly recommend this book (MB) to anyone looking for an in-depth coverage of the central themes of molecular biology (how DNA and genes work). It goes pretty deep for a first course, but it does not presume much of any background knowledge so it would be an appropriate book to introduce someone to the subject who wants to understand things very thoroughly.

If I had to choose only one or the other I'd still prefer the new MBoC edition due to its much broader coverage of cell biology (it's also 50% larger and twice as expensive though), but this one is really excellent at what it covers. I bought it after previewing the "Look Inside" pages and I have not been disappointed.

If the mechanics of the functioning of cells interests you then you'll probably be fascinated and really enjoy the depth of knowledge you gain from this book, and it's something you'll want to keep and probably use frequently as a reference if you progress further in the study of biology. If you find the details tedious, then this one might be more depth than you want, and something like Essential Cell Biology, 4th Edition might serve you better.

Currently this book is not available as a Kindle "Print Replica" e-textbook yet, where the other titles mentioned here are.

Really happy with the book, easily a 5+ star experience.

Excellent illustrations/case studies to help clarify more difficult points
By Suzanne Jacobs
Though review of genome function to include current available information re: RNAi, CRISPR, etc. Excellent illustrations/case studies to help clarify more difficult points. Excellent terminology and index. Will be kept as reference for anticipated studies with the understanding that information changes and expands daily but the basic information will remain the same.

A clever technique teaching Vastu
By Simona Rich (blogger)
This was my first book on Vastu Sastra. At first it was hard to understand it and the author repeats himself over and over again. But as the book progresses, more and more new vastu tools are introduced together with continuously repeating the most important stuff. The result of reading this book was that I clearly understood the basic principles of vastu and learn less important but still relevant details of this science.

At first it was annoying to read repetitive information but towards the end of the book I understood that this repetition is very beneficial for the reader. The author does so so that you would get the basis right, and then learn some other stuff too. So the author (actually there are two authors) is brilliant, yet at first you think he knows nothing how to teach.

The book will teach you about the proper layout of your garden as well as the home. External layout is more important than the internal one. Vastu sastra applies to India mainly, because it's closely related with the amount of sun this country gets.

If you want to get a good general understanding of this Indian Feng Shui science, I recommend getting this book.
