A Marvelous Book

I'm writing this minutes after a sublime experience, drinking Evan Goldstein's recommended fruit-forward Pinot Noir with Joyce Goldstein's incredibly good recipe for Pork Loin Glazed with Pomegranate and Orange. I actually Googled Evan's name because I wanted to send him some fan e-mail -- alas, couldn't find an address. So the least I can do is give the book an excellent review. I learned more about pairing wine and food in the book's first chapter than I have after years of subscribing to wine publications. Two thumbs up!

Great on content, poor on photos

If you don't care that much about photos with recipes, this book is excellent on text. There is a photo section in the middle but personally I like to see at least half of the cookbook with accompanying photos. I gave this as a first anniversary gift to my son and daughter-in-law because they enjoy both wines and foods. She liked it a lot for the information about how to combine dishes and also the sections on history of the wines/regions. It is weak on information about American wines and in some cases it might be difficult to find some of the foreign wines mentioned. I would probably use it more as a reference book than a standard cookbook.

Solid good advice, good for main or back up book!

I wish that I could have the knowledge of this book by osmosis. To read Evan's insightful comments about a wine, then to read suggestions on food pairings with that wine, is a delight. Additionally, Joyce's ample recipes, some simple, some complex, are well chosen, and a strong plus for adventuresome cooks to buy this book.

This was my favorite pairing book (and there's several books out there!) till recently.

When I saw a copy of "What to Drink with What You Eat: The Definitive Guide to Pairing Food with Wine...by Andrew Dornenburg, I realized that Dorenberg had "one-upped" this good text in different ways. One can find the food type, or the dominant spicing or saucing, then work backwards to the wines that are better suited. This is a more intuitive way for most people not well versed in different wines, and is better for me, as I need to match a wine to a fish's sauce more than to the fish. Still it does not diminish my appreciation for Perfect Pairing one bit. Evan Goldstein's Perfect Pairings does acknowledge this importance as well on pages 22-23 and 26-7, however many readers may gloss over this. The book is not as well geared as Dorenberg's in my opinion, for things such as spicy or some Asian or other ethnic foods, your mileage may vary.

Additionally, Dorenberg's book expands one's options with a food to go beyond wine for pairings, to include spirits, beer, etc. This makes more sense, as I just love a good beer with some things (some Asian food, German foods, etc.) that just don't work as well with recommended wines. The drawback (or plus, to some) to Dorenburg's book is that it isn't a text as Goldstein's. Dorenburg's book, after a few brief text chapters, is an extensive alphabetical listing of numerous foods and beverages, followed by their matches, with no explanation present, or felt needed.

I like Goldstein's Perfect Pairings dessert/dessert wine chapter, for example, having a sweet tooth. This section gives a good overview of different wines (late harvest, fortified, sparkling), and then separately talks about tree/stone fruit desserts, creamy and custard desserts, nut and dried-frut desserts, and finally the chocolatee, coffee, and caramel desserts..and recommends appropriate wines for each dessert classification.

Glance through both wine pairing books, and see which book style suits your needs best. I enjoy aspects of both, for different reasons, and appreciate each for it's strengths.

Recommended by an art teacher

I teach color theory, and this is the book I recommend to my students. I've tried some of the others, and none compare. It includes everything you need to understand color, whether you are a painter or designer, and it's clearly written and well organized with good visual examples. I'm still using this second edition-- I've looked at the third edition and don't see much difference. Get the 2nd edition used (I paid $8 for it here) and save yourself about $70.

I read the reviews of David Hornung's book on color and one of the reviewers said that this book (Koenig's) was vastly superior. So I bought it. It's okay. But that's about it. The design of the book is very dated looking, classic textbook. The writing is tired and un-engaging and the samples are equally so. The problem is, the underlying ideas of color theory and use are pretty established, so finding a fresh way to present them takes a bit of effort. Hornung's book is exceptional at this task. Beautifully written, handsome in design and unique in its examples it is by far a better treatment of the subject.
And for illustrators and painters James Gurneys book "Color and Light for the Realist Painter" is magisterial.
Koenig's book will sit on my shelf and I'll take it down once in a while to check a reference, but it won't be in the rotation of books I recommend.

If you love fashion photography or beautiful images in general, do not hesitate to buy this book. Incredible images in a beautifully put together book. There is something so otherworldly about Bassman's photos - it's as though your looking at a dream sequence. I found it easy to get lost in her work.
All images are in black in white - and take up the entire page. Truly stunning. I'm thinking about buying a second copy so I can frame some of the images.

Fabulous Lillian Bassman Coffee Table Book

The prints are wonderful (which if you are considering this, you already know). The book is a large hard cover (about 11x14 eye balling it). There is a short introduction, then the book is one beautiful photograph after another. (Usually 1 photo per 2 page spread). Most images take up a page to a page and a half with the title and date opposite page. The book has approximately 230 pages.

Lillian Bassman is a true master of photography. Her amazing high contrast fashion and beauty work never cease to amaze me. She is most know for her black and whites, which this book is full of. This book covers a selection of her work from the 1940s to the 1990s.

The info in the about section is now incorrect. As of February 13, 2012, Lillian Bassman passed away, although its said she kept shooting until the end of her beautiful long life.

PreSchool-Grade 3 This engaging book tells about a young boy's coming-of-age in an isolated rural community around the turn of the last century, and about the special baskets made by the people who live in the hills above the Hudson River. For years, the child has been eager to join his father on his monthly walk to the nearby town to sell the baskets. Pa always goes at the time of the "basket moon" (the full moon) because he needs its light to find his way home. Finally, after the boy's ninth birthday, he accompanies his father to town. He is excited by all the new things he sees there, but when a townie taunts them with "A tisket, a tasket, hillbilly basket! That's all a bushwhacker knows," he is devastated. He wants nothing further to do with basket making and wants his family to stop, too. One of his father's helpers, seeing the boy's distress, helps him to understand the artistic nature of their craft, and to value such work. The story is told by the boy in lyrical prose, and is graced by Cooney's soft-hued oil-and-acrylic paintings. The artist makes the mountains and forests glow with a suffused light that enhances their beauty and softens the family's hard life, and she artistically incorporates the various steps of basket making described in the text. An afterword explains a little of the history of these baskets and the people who made them. A luminous and deeply satisfying look back in time. A nineteenth-century boy watches his dad make baskets from the trees around their home in the hills of Columbia County, New York, and finally Pa allows the boy to go with him to sell baskets in Hudson. The boy enjoys the town, the trading, and the adventure, but when a townsman sneers at them as "hillbillies," he is ashamed and wants nothing more to do with the basket craft in his home. Children will understand the boy's longing to join Pa, his pride in the family work, and his bitter hurt at the insult; they will also feel his initial anger and rejection. How he finds affirmation is more subtle, and it is here that Cooney's quiet, beautiful paintings in oil pastel and acrylic express the essence of the story, weaving together from the first double-page spread to the last the basket maker's natural world and the work of his craft. The images combine folk art and landscape scenes in widening circles that include the round moon, the rolling hills, the path through the woods, the curling bark from the trees, and the arc of the workman's tools ("Under. Mr. Zhao is also the president of the Structural Engineering Institute, ASCE Maryland Chapter. He is the author of two books on bridge design and one on risk management.

Demetrius Tonias, P.E., is an award-winning author of numerous works on civil and transportation engineering. As a member of the Adjunct Engineering Faculty of Union College, he taught a variety of courses, including Bridge and Highway Engineering, Infrastructure Management Systems, and refresher courses for the E.I.T. and PE professional licensing examinations. Mr. Tonias is an accomplished software developer with extensive experience in the development of civil engineering computer applications.

A useful reference for bridge engineers

This book is a textbook on bridge engineering suitable for engineering students, bridge engineers in the early phase of their careers who need to develop their knowledge base, and more experienced bridge engineers seeking a handy reference. Some key strengths of the book are:

- Updating to the LRFD code. Given how massive the LRFD code is, this book serves as a less overwhelming gateway to the code (but certainly not a subsitute for it).

- The scope goes beyond design of new bridges, to also cover inspection, maintenance, remedial design, and other practical topics, in at least enough depth to meaningfully introduce these topics.

- The writing style, and use of interesting sidebars, makes the book relatively inviting, almost fun to read.

It is a nice book

About half of the book focuses on the bridge superstructure. The chapter on management at the back of the book is not very long. There are a bunch of design examples throughout the chapters of the book that you should study real closely.

I ended up learning some more about post tensioning, pre stressing, wingwalls and some other topics inside this book, considering that I didn't take a bridge engineering course in my undergraduate (I wish I did).

If you have a chance to take a bridge engineering course, seize the moment. Considering the long bridges that are being built in countries overseas, it would be handy to know what you would be up against if you want to work on a bridge project or design a bridge one day.

I recommend this book, and I suggest borrowing it from someone you know or check it out from a library before you decide to buy the book. It is worth reading.

I am one year into my first job as a bridge inspector/designer. I bought this book to get a more knowledge about the bridge industry and I have to say so far this book is great. I am learning great vocabulary, history about the industry and common problems that arise when inspecting and designing a bridge. I bought the kindle version and I am 21% in. As a result of buying a kindle version, there are some minor shortcomings like the links that you click on a page; there are no return links. If you select a link that jumps 100 pages ahead, and you don't remember where you left off you're screwed. But anyhow, it is great!
